2007: Un peu trouble a cause de la levure. Le cote malter est evident (caramel, sucre brun, fruits confits). Une touche d alcool. Bonne amertume et arome de houblon, pas trop dominate, laisse paraitre plus le malt. Mon barley wine preferer a date, bat le solstice d hivers de Dieu du Ciel selon moi. Delicieuse biere... J ai une caisse de 12 qui vieilli... ainsi qu une 2006...
2007: A bit cloudy because of the yeast. Malty side is quite evident (caramel, brown sugar, candied fruits). Alcohol notes. Good hop bittering and aromas which lets the malty backbone get throught easily. My favorite BW yet, even beats Dieu du Ciels Solstice dhiver. I have a case of 12 of these aging and a 1 2006.

Old review from June 14, 2015. Vintage 2012, bottle from LCBO, aged more than a year at home. Strong aromas of toffee and oak, sweetness. Reddish brown with off-white head. 2009 bottle shared by luttonm. Thanks! Twist off cap. Reddish orange pour. No head. Dusty dark fruit aroma. Flavor is dry, dusty, soft dark fruit paired with strange malts. Soft cherry as well. 2011 Edition, 10%abv. Rated 2013. Poured an average size 1/2" thick head that goes away rather quickly and leaves an extremely thin coating. Has a cloudy, rusty copper appearance. Alcohol is pretty noticeable. Yeasty and bready malt aromas dominate with spiced hops. Kind of like a brandy scent. Sweet flavours abound, caramel, toffee as well as spices, herbal hops, yeast, plums and raisins. The alcohol also makes an appearance. Nice warming sensation. Slick drying mouthfeel. Slight tingling aftertaste. Strong and bitter finish. Lively carbonation. Pretty good stuff! saindon (3) - - JUN 18, 2017 does not count

2016 bottle: consumed young in April 2017. Pours a clear amber, not too bubbly, but not as flat as a lot of barleywines. Aroma is initially earthy and subtly sweet, not a lot of alcohol for its 10%. Surprising amount of bitterness up front, but subsequent sips reveal a malty and floral backbone. Bitter hops sit on the tongue throughout; age would probably mellow this out.

2012 bottle: consumed a few days later, April 2017. Not at all clear; a cloudy brown - looks almost like thick apple cider. Suspended particles visible through the haze. Bubbles barely there; just a hint of white at the edge of the glass. Aroma is a rich cocktail of malt, caramel, and apples. Palate is thick, but mouthfeel is negatively impacted by the low carbonation, which has reduced significantly with age. Taste: light bitterness, moderate sweetness. Apple and caramel with a hint of rusted metal. This is very good, but has probably aged past its prime. Would have loved to try the 2013 or 2014 bottle. I’ll be saving my other 2016 for two more years.

1 year old bottle : Sexy veiled dark amber color, with low activity and a haze of yeast. Creamy and slightly frothy light brown 3 finger head, lasting around 15 minutes, with decent legs and good swirl construct. Flavors of dark grains, caramel, clove, apples, berries, Belgian yeast, honey, oak, herbal spices. Dense sugary malts with deep bitter and coarse spices, not perfumy. Thick oily medium body with crispy and prickly carbonation. Very strong finish, some burnt caramel, thick yeast, leafy hops, orange peels, soft barrel aged feel. Quite bold and heavily spiced, a bit too much. Not pleasant and slightly astringent. Sharp vinous and very dry, did not age well. Not well intensified nor accessible, boosting low freshness. The body feels a little too thick. The flavors are still pretty good, and it’s quite warming. Quality ingredients but poor performance. Overall good quality craft, more like a cross between a quad than an actual true barleywine. Lagerboy (2239) - British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 10, 2016
341 ml bottle, 2011 vintage. Unclear murky copper, lotsa off-white sediment, fading tan foam. Powerful boozy rich fruity caramel malty aroma. Taste is slightly mellower, dark fruits, caramel and toffee, warming alcohol, reminiscent of rum cake or pudding. Softer carbonation, full bodied, moderately hopped. 341ml bottled 2015, open on 2016-09-26. Pour orange amber with red reflections. Small bubbles and compact off white foam crowned the liquid. Aroma of wet oak and lightly roasted malt with some dark prune notes. The presence of alcohol is the first to show his nose. The malty feel and the oak chips is well balance. Full body, oily texture and dryness makes a good appearance. Long malty and ethanol finish. Not for the for the fainted.

Bottle 341ml (2013) – cellared for 3 years. Served at room temperature. Pours copper with a slight haze. Head is medium sized, dense, beige, and lasts very well. Aroma shows notes of citrus hops; biscuity malts, glazed orange slices, ripe nectarines, raisins, toffee, brandy (light), aniseed and a pinch of cinnamon. Flavour is a medium hop bitterness with biscuity malts; white nectarines, ruby grapefruit, dried currants, toffee, aniseed, hints of oak and a sappy/peppery finish. Full bodied with soft carbonation, an oily texture and a long warming finish.
