Based on the original cask recipe, HSD, or Hicks Special Draught to give its full name, has been specially bottled to capture the unique flavour of this outstanding beer. HSD is simply superb as a bottled ale, retaining many of the kaleidoscope of flavours, inherent in the draught version.

Reasonable session beer. Good bitter balance (as advertised) nicely balanced on the body (malt) side. A pleasant beer overall and I wouldn’t turn one down if offered again.

Bijl (742) - NETHERLANDS - SEP 2, 2017
Kopergeel, helder, crèmekleurige foamy schuimkraag, iets koolzuur. Aroma: Moutig, iets rood fruit, karamel/toffee. Smaak: Biscuit mout, beetje karamelzoet, fruitig tintje, spicy hops, redelijke bitter en op het einde iets droog. Medium body, zacht koolzuur. Prima UK Bitter.

Bottle from Tesco. Pours hazy gold colour with minimal head that soon dissipates. Aroma overwhelmingly sweet, caramel and butterscotch with vague fruit hints. Somewhat too gassy and not enough taste to be overly enjoyable.

AshtonMcCobb (6772) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - DEC 19, 2016
Bottle from Beers of Europe. Appearance - amber with a nice fluffy head. Nose - a touch of redcurrant, light malt bag. Taste - canned cherries, a hint of marzipan. Palate - close to medium bodied with a crunchy texture and a dry crunchy finish. Overall - I like this.

allmyvinyl (10835) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - DEC 19, 2016
Bottle shared with Ashton McCobb. Pours clear amber with a thick white head. Aromas of light toffee, stewed tea, tinned dark stone fruit. Taste is more tea, tannins, toffee. Some red fruit. Ok.

Bottle at home, 20/08/16 ... not a cellar aged ESB !!! Golden amber with a well appointed light beige head - a decent looker. Nose is biscuit malt, toffee, fruit cake, light spice, stewed dates. Taste comprises caramel, biscuit, toasted brown sugar, fruit cake, toffee, light nutty flavour. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, light bitterness in a drying close. Decent well rounded ESB.

500 ml bottle, from CITTI-Markt Flensburg. BB date 21.12.2013. ABV is 5.0%. Malts are Maris Otter pale, Crystal and roast. Hops are First Gold, Fuggle and Goldings. Amber colour, slightly hazy. Large and lasting white head. Aroma of soap / dish washing liquid. The flavour has a slight acidity, but not disturbing. Some fruit, "dusty" hops in the finish. A pity about the aroma! Also sampled a bottle with BB date 16. Feb. 2013, from the same store. Gusher bottle. Amber colour with some floaties, moderate to low white head. Soapy aroma here too, but actually a bit better than the first bottle. The flavour has slightly less acidity, quite drinkable. However, it seems obvious that this beer is not fit for cellaring. Will rerate if I find a fresh bottle.

An enjoyable pint with nice fruity flavours. A very slight background of alcohol that takes away from the other pleasant flavours. Not the best beer from this brewery.

beeebon (467) - Cornwall, ENGLAND - OCT 17, 2014
Pours a reddish brown with minimal head. The aroma has quite a lot going on, caramel malt is very noticable along with orange, currents and a general stewed fruit quality. Taste is medium sweet and lightly bitter, there’s a definite earthiness in there and mild bitterness. Pretty decent!

hohops (1047) - Kent, ENGLAND - JUL 13, 2014
Appearance is amber and pretty clear, plenty of carbonation, a one finger persisting beige head. Aroma- lots of malt, caramel, hops, lemon hints. Medium mouthfeel, orangey and hoppy taste, biscuity, some fruit, a bitter finish, a juicy quality. Nice.

robinvboyer (4719) - Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 1, 2014
Very light, biscuity malts, quite pale, distinct UK hopping. Soft carb, medium mouth feel. Light bitterness, bready, slightly grassy finish.
