Controversial? A contradiction in terms? Certainly a subject for discussion; is there such a thing as a black India Pale Ale? Whichever way you look at it, this beer is designed to challenge the sences. Black as stout, close your eyes and taste and this beer is classic IPA. Powerful hops dominate the restrained chocolate and coffee notes from the carefully selected roasted malt. Whatever you thought you knew about beer, we’ve just changed that!

Bottle. Black colour with a medium light brown head. Rich aroma of toffee, caramel, light roastedness and bitter hops. Nice beer.

568ml bottle. Pours an ink black with a tan head. Aroma: roasted malt, bitter cocoa, toasted bread, citrus and mild tropical notes. Taste: roasted malt, bitter cocoa, citrus, grapefruit, mild peach flavours. Complex flavour balance. Medium bodied. Moderate carbonation. Moderate bitterness, that lingers on the palate. Quite tasty without being exceptional. Definitely a beer I will drink again!

Bottles from Tesco, Gateshead and Open All Hours, Keswick. An extremely dark brown-black beer with red highlights. It has a sharp bitter citrus hoppy flavour followed by roasted coffee, chocolate and pine on the warming finish. Excellent!

Gets a high rating, surprisingly, for being one of the most unique beers I've tasted. Smoky, woody, harsh, sharp and with a lingering finish. Definitely an autumn/winter ale.

jamestulloch (4330) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - NOV 9, 2017
Bottle. Black body with a thick beige head. Good lacing. Aroma of plum and coffee. Flavour of wood and filter coffee. Thin to medium body with a watery texture. Soft fizz. Woody and easy to drink. Pretty good.

Pours black or dark brown with small head. Some notes of burned malts on nose and taste. Palate also slight burnt notes and slight bitter.

Tesco- 500ml Bottle Conditioned version 24/10/17. Pours deep black with a slight bleed of red at the bottom of the glass. Initially, a compact 1&1/2 finger head dissipating to a thin off-white 1/2 head. Aroma, a good citrus hopped backbone, edge of banana and slightly soft melon; surprisingly a limited amount of roasted malts coming through. Initially, without the conditioning poured in it tastes like a well-rounded IPA. Once the conditioning is added the roasted element comes to fruition on the back-end. This is also echoed in the aroma. Light-ish mouthfeel, would hope for a tad more. Overall, very drinkable and an enjoyable Black IPA; interesting to see how before the conditioning was added the emphasis laid with the hops but then with the conditioning came accentuated chocolate and coffee flavours.

UPDATED: NOV 1, 2017 Pours smoothly and leaves very little head on top. Combination of strong roasted malt and hops flavours combine well making a good strong flavour with out being overbearing. This sold out fast at the Tesco's in Sunbury and I'm not surprised. Lovely beer.

steveddy (32) - Chichester, West Sussex, ENGLAND - SEP 24, 2017
Pours like a porter. Caramel head. Gorgeous hope aroma but not backed up with bitterness or much malt flavour. I like it but not as much as I wanted to. Proper job IPA does a better proper job.

Bottle sourced from Tescos Streatham, thanks to and shared with the folks (11/09/2017) - black pour with creamy beige head. Roasted malty and hoppy with some caramel, some chocolatey malty notes, pine needles, roasted malty and hoppy into the close.

Butelka 500ml. Czarny kolor. Piana srednia, bezowa opada dosc szybko do pieracienia. W zapachu intensywne polaczenie palonych slodow ,czekolady i kawy z cytusowo-sosnowymi akcentami.
