Controversial? A contradiction in terms? Certainly a subject for discussion; is there such a thing as a black India Pale Ale? Whichever way you look at it, this beer is designed to challenge the sences. Black as stout, close your eyes and taste and this beer is classic IPA. Powerful hops dominate the restrained chocolate and coffee notes from the carefully selected roasted malt. Whatever you thought you knew about beer, weve just changed that!

Bottle. Black colour with a medium light brown head. Rich aroma of toffee, caramel, light roastedness and bitter hops. Nice beer.

(bottle) Black coloured hue with a big and brown foamy head. Fruity hoppy aroma with notes of citrus and earthy mildly roasted malt, including shy hints of chocolate and liquorice. Mildly roasty bitter flavor with a tinge of sourness, medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Slightly roast-malty and earthy taste with mildly citric and subtle piney hops; quite dry, mildly roast malty and bitter hoppy finish with a fruity and delicately piney edge. Solid. 20.VI.17

Bottle (@ local Trinkschlecht): Lterally black, presumably hazy, big and stable creamy tanned head, moderate to solid dryish roasty, coffeeish and chocolatey nose with traces of dried berries, distinctive herbal to piney hops underneath; solid dry bitter flavour, still sweet dark malty influences detectable; medium bodied, creamy MF; soft and lingering dry herbal-piney and roasty finish. Very good, fortunately more like a Dry Stout than like an IPA...

Luneylane (172) - Taipei City, TAIWAN - MAY 20, 2017
A bottle from Padstow Tesco, drunk at Dads place while home on leave. Aroma: coffee, chocolate, citrus fruits. Appearance: black; head goes away to nothing. Palate: medium-bodied and slick, average carbonation, astringent with roasted notes at the finish. Taste: medium bitter. Weird, I like the roasted flavour, but the citrus flavour seems to clash with it. Tasty though, and I would drink another.

Bottle. Pours black with a decent tan head. Aromas of fruit, hops and dark malts. Flavours of roasted malts, some chocolate and coffee with subtle grapefruit notes. Decent bitter finish.

Davros IX (329) - Hertford, Hertfordshire, ENGLAND - MAY 4, 2017
2016 catch up - This is a very, very good black IPA. And it is a proper black IPA as there is a good strong hit of hops alongside the malt. Beautiful colour and a head that lasted all the way to the bottom. A fantastic mouthfeel of malt and hops and probably the best mass produced black IPA you can get in the UK.

Roastiness in the taste. Bitterness. Not that much fruitiness. Very low carbonation.

0,33l fles gedeeld met lion. Heerlijk diepe drop en mokka tonen fruit op de achtergrond niet verkeerd maar had iets meer fruit in mogen zitten

Bottle, 500ml. A dark black colour with a large tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and fresh grapefruit. Flavour has more grapefruit, chocolate, caramel, a little hop bitterness. Light carbonation. Quite tasty but Im not keen on the grapefruit notes.

Tjeerd (514) - GERMANY - MAR 16, 2017
Black beer with hardly a head. Taste is sweetish and mildly bitter. Medium body and low carbonation. Not bad.
