Bottle conditioned.
NOTE: This is an entirely different beer to the the Smugglers Ale launched in 2006 and now discontinued.
A very special bounty indeed, Smugglers is a unique blend of dark ale and oak-aged barley wine. This strong beer is brewed and racked into oak whisky casks before being hidden away in our cellars. During its long slumber the beer undergoes an extraordinary transformation, emerging rich and complex with hints of whisky, creamy vanilla, toffee and spice.
A blend of oak aged barley wine and dark ale brewed from natural Cornish spring water, Maris Otter pale ale malt, Crystal and Roasted malts, dark brewing sugar, First Gold, Fuggle, and Styrian Golding hops, coriander and our own Brewer’s yeast.

Scopey (14498) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - FEB 23, 2016
Cask at The Chainlocker & Shipwrights, Falmouth. It pours deep red - brown with a decent light tan head. The nose is bitter - sweet, toffee, fruit cake, light bubble gum, candied peel, earth, wood and leather. The taste is firmly bitterness, earthy, leather, drying, damp leaves, some dried fruit sweetness, toasted nut, alcohol boost with a lingering dry, woody finish. Medium body and fine, foamy carbonation. Decent enough old style old, not a huge amount of depth, but enjoyable enough.

imdownthepub (14440) - Banbury, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - FEB 10, 2016
Bottled, 500ml from Tesco in Banbury. Copper with faintest of heads, quite flat. There is a toffee, vanilla flavour from the start with this with a fruity tartness alongside. The alcohol shows through what is a body bordering on thinnish. Certainly not Barley Wine though. A bit mixed up for me but okay.

Draught at CBF 2015. Hazy, dark amber colour with a golden tint, Thin, off-white head. Sweet aroma with caramel, fruits, toffee, vanilla, spicy hints, nuts and almond. Taste is sweet. Medium body with a creamy texture. Finishes sweet and fruity with caramel malts, toasted notes and dark, dried fruits. Okay, rather sweet for me.

Bottle, shared with my father in law. Hazy dark brown with golden Amber highlights. Woody caramel, prunes, soft yeasty esters. Like a mini-quad, sort of.
