COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Quite simply my favourite Belgium beer in this style, blows Westy away and thankfully lacks the absurd hype. Beautiful condition with good lacing, always best left for a while to allow it to breath, aroma of candy and rich fruit cake. Warming but unabtrusive alcohol compliments the massive fruit and pear drop complexities, just rich and beauiful. I may not be able to describe flavours that well, but i know a great beer, and this one of the greats.

Bottle. Pours a murky opaque brown with a quickly fading light beige bubbly head. Aroma is of dark fruits, caramel, nuts, chocolate. Taste is of dark fruits, figs, dates, blackcurrants, nuts, treacle. Light oily mouthfeel, medium carbonation.

Kolor głęboko bursztynowy, mętne, bardzo obfita piana. Zapach niezbyt mocny, świeży, korzenny, lekko nektarowy. W smaku słodkie i alkoholowe, karmel, rodzynki, piernik, lukrecja.

Big malt forward taste. You can also really taste the alcohol (10%). Sweet with notes of overly ripe bananas and raisins. Very nice complexity that Mellows as it warms. Supposedly it has a balanced bitterness but I am only picking up very subtle bitter notes. A good quad but I much prefer rochefort 10 Just shared a large one with Bruce on the deck last night and I have to say it was very tasty. tried a rochefort 10 after that and found them comparable. I need to A/B them again side-by-side but at the same time August 2017 you must let this almost come to room temperature to come into its own ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Terecht het broertje van WestVleteren 12 genoemd. Een van de beste bruine Belgische bieren. Mooi gebalanceerd.

UPDATED: SEP 15, 2017 25cl on tap, at BeerCascais. Reddish dark brown color with medium beige head. Medium and soft carbonation. Full bodied and creamy texture. Aroma is very complex with plums, chocolate, yeast, vanilla, spices, hops and dried fruits. Taste is also complex but very balanced, is low to medium sweet but also has some bitterness, also tastes chocolate, dried plums, pepper, cloves and many other flavours that I’m not capable do distinguish. Aftertaste is sweet and very long. Is indeed very similar to Westveleteren 12, but less sweet, little more bitter and not so full bodied, although we can notice very well they share the same roots.

Very good dark Belgian Ale, rich and complex in taste. Quite strong, yet not too alcoholic in taste. A very enjoyable brew!

very close to westvleteren 12 indeed. a superbly heavy and complex belgian brown ale that will definitely get you there. Try to drink it in the same pose as the monk on the label is taking (right index finger pointing up and left hand drinking), the experience will be even better.
