COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic Quadrupel style of Belgiums best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. Its a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Originally reviewed: 11/27/12. Spent the holiday weekend down in Greenville, SC with some friends and had to go the Trappe Door for my Belgian fix. I really wanted a Quad, but alas, there were none on draft. This is one Ive wanted to try for quite some time, but keep passing up. Not this time. This was the small 11.2oz bottle, poured into a St. Bernardus chalice. Pours a dark ruby-mahogany garnet with a small sheet of lace on top. Rich aroma of plum, grape, stawberry, alcohol, all washed in a pleasant floral scent. Carbonated well. Good heft to this makes this a great sipper. Holds up the richness of this beer quite well. The flavors mirror the aroma making this one a nice decadent treat. Fig, raisin, plum, molasses, syrup, and just a touch of booze on the finish. Theres a lot going on here, and Im not sure this bottle was big enough for me to capture all of the nuances. I guess thats what the 750s are for. This was a treat, and one I would gladly have again.

Purchased in a brick pack(12, 8, 6, Tripel and St.Bernardus chalice) some years ago. I must admit i prefer this over Rochefort 10. Definitely the closest thing to Westy 12.

very much an Essential Beer. Struggling to think of something with similarly wide distribution and price that could compete. Definitely doesnt fall in the sugar zone with other quads and traps - drinkable as all heck. Perfect carbo, nice hoppiness.

Bottle (2015) @ Six Roses, Lille - FR. Color: deep dark brown beer with no carbonation and medium brown head. Smell: caramel with cherry notes. Candied and alcohol cherry notes. Roasted malt and small alcohol finish. Taste: full body with strong caramel roasted malt, cherry notes and full candied fruits bouquet. Great balance and quite drinkable. Aftertaste: alcohol and roasted caramel malt bouquet. Really great!

Bought this beer as a christmas package for my family. When you drink this beer, it rekindles your lost love for the good abbey work.

Great Price vs. Quality vs. Availability relation. Very stable, one of the best Belgian beers in this matter.
