COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Originally reviewed: 11/27/12. Spent the holiday weekend down in Greenville, SC with some friends and had to go the Trappe Door for my Belgian fix. I really wanted a Quad, but alas, there were none on draft. This is one I’ve wanted to try for quite some time, but keep passing up. Not this time. This was the small 11.2oz bottle, poured into a St. Bernardus chalice. Pours a dark ruby-mahogany garnet with a small sheet of lace on top. Rich aroma of plum, grape, stawberry, alcohol, all washed in a pleasant floral scent. Carbonated well. Good heft to this makes this a great sipper. Holds up the richness of this beer quite well. The flavors mirror the aroma making this one a nice decadent treat. Fig, raisin, plum, molasses, syrup, and just a touch of booze on the finish. There’s a lot going on here, and I’m not sure this bottle was big enough for me to capture all of the nuances. I guess that’s what the 750s are for. This was a treat, and one I would gladly have again.

UPDATED: JAN 11, 2018 In aroma bit malty. I can sense dried fruits, carmel and some spices. Dark amber color with massive beige head. Beer has quite clear consistency. In taste bit malty and bit sweet - quite similar as in the aroma. Later comes flavors as dried fruits and carmel, slight bitterness and roasted bread. Full bodied with medium carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden. Beer is very drinkable for it's strengh however that particular bottle was aged for over 4 years. All in all very good beer. Definitely deserves top 50 in it's style.

Very good abbey strong beer, almost the same league as Rochefort and Westvleteren, but maybe not as exclusive. But this is misleading anyway, this beer is among the best that Belgium has to offer.

Aroma potente aviejado. Gusto dulzón a pasas, caramelo, regaliz?, especias. Mucho cuerpo.

Fin lagring ljusbrunt skum. Svart svart brun. Fikon kaffe annan frukt i aromen. Väl dold sprit. Mustig och utsökt komplex smakbild. Lite spritig men ändå mild. Bäst av de fyra Bernardus.
