COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Hazy dark brown color with a nice dark red glow coming through, off-white head. Nice smell and taste, like this better than Westvleteren 12. Very nice quadrupel.

Clear red/brown color, white head. Brewers from westvletern can make beers for them selves - sweet malts, rutes, punes, rainsens, licurice, hop. Very nice.

Aroma of dark fruits backed by roasted caramel malt. Deep ruby tinged dark amber color with a beige head that quickly flattened. Medium bodied; moderate, nearly creamy, carbonation. The flavor is prune, molasses, raisin, brown sugar, wheat?, caramel malt. Smoothly fruity, sort of. The finish is sweet around the edges, with some bitter at the back of the mouth. It is to die for. Fortunately, only the bank account has to pass over. Got to get more.

Draft - Sweet red fruits, raisins, and a bit of alcohol. Deep solid brown with a minimal head. Sweet red fruits, no bitterness or alcohol. A nice abt ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: FEB 5, 2014 Re-rate 1/5/14: Bottle from my cellar shared at a tasting at Oren’s place. 2006 bottle. Murky dark brown. Aroma full of dark fruits, somewhat oxidized with port, caramel, a bit of chocolate and a bit of nutty hints. Sweetish flavor with chocolate, dark fruits, oxidized vinous notes and a finish with a light alcoholic touch. Medium-bodied. Aged pretty nicely. 7/3/7/3/14=3.4

(Re-rated on 7/15/07. Took a point from the aroma and a point from overall impression. Changed the description a bit). Bottle. Color is very dark brown, with a lovely beige-brown head that lasts long. Aroma of malt, yeast, dark fruits, caramel and a bit of alcohol. Flavor is sweet with malt, raisins, carmael and some yeast. A nice full body with a spicy, alcoholic and a bit bitter finish. A great beer. 7/4/8/4/16=3.9

11.2 oz bottle poured a cloudyreddish brown with a large rocky amber head. Aromas of dark fruit, spices, brown sugar and a hint of bubblegum. Palate was full bodied and smooth. Flavors of dates, raisins, brown sugar and spices with a sweet lingering finish.

33cl bottle from Cask & Kitchen. Pours very dark brown with foamy beige head. Nose; sweet caramel malt, dark fruits (figs, plums), medicinal and some bubblegum! Taste; smooth start, caramel, cinnamon, raisins, figs, bubblegum, wood, well hidden alcohol, complex, but very well balanced, One of the best.

Draught at De Zolder, Brugge. Magnificent dark red brown hued with a doughy thick head. I found the draught to more flavoursome than previous bottles, there was whiskey like malt, oak, late tobacco and some banana. Luckily it wasn't carbonated and when it had warmed somewhat it gave out a delightful alcohol glow. Great beer.

Big bottle as shown. Pours a dark amber color with a large light tan head. The aroma is a strong malty aroma with hints of hazlenut and vanilla. Very good lacing on this one. The taste is very sweet malt with vanilla and cream, hides the alcohol well. A special beer for my 100th rating.
