COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

UPDATED: MAR 12, 2007 Bottle. Aroma is mostly yeasty with a hint of brown sugar. Dark reddish brown colour, semi-stable brown head. Suspended yeast. Peppery flavour. Warming alcohol. Flavour of dark malts with a hint of bitter aftertaste. Some sweetness, but well-hidden by the alcohol. Very peppery and beautifully bready. Thick, creamy mouthfeel that almost tickles, perhaps due to the alcohol. Hm, there IS a lot of alcohol in this, isn’t there?

Aroma of dark fruits backed by roasted caramel malt. Deep ruby tinged dark amber color with a beige head that quickly flattened. Medium bodied; moderate, nearly creamy, carbonation. The flavor is prune, molasses, raisin, brown sugar, wheat?, caramel malt. Smoothly fruity, sort of. The finish is sweet around the edges, with some bitter at the back of the mouth. It is to die for. Fortunately, only the bank account has to pass over. Got to get more.

33cl bottle from Cask & Kitchen. Pours very dark brown with foamy beige head. Nose; sweet caramel malt, dark fruits (figs, plums), medicinal and some bubblegum! Taste; smooth start, caramel, cinnamon, raisins, figs, bubblegum, wood, well hidden alcohol, complex, but very well balanced, One of the best.

Big bottle as shown. Pours a dark amber color with a large light tan head. The aroma is a strong malty aroma with hints of hazlenut and vanilla. Very good lacing on this one. The taste is very sweet malt with vanilla and cream, hides the alcohol well. A special beer for my 100th rating.

Draught at De Zolder, Brugge. Magnificent dark red brown hued with a doughy thick head. I found the draught to more flavoursome than previous bottles, there was whiskey like malt, oak, late tobacco and some banana. Luckily it wasn't carbonated and when it had warmed somewhat it gave out a delightful alcohol glow. Great beer.
