Abbey Ale
Ingredients: Water, barley malt, sugar, hops, yeast
A traditional abbey style dubbel, chestnut in colour, very fruity with notes of melon and very fresh banana, finishing with slight bitterness. Delightfully easy to drink. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren

UPDATED: FEB 7, 2008 Amazing lacing on this beer. Color wise, it pours similar to it big brother (Abt 12), muddy brown, with an amber tinge. Aroma is quite nice and complex. Flowers are the first note that hits me, followed by vanilla, raisin, ginger, anise, cinnamon and some yeast and very very slight cereal notes. Flavor is pleasant and refreshing, but nothing to special. Has a nutty finish. I poured one glass at 38F and one at the recommended 48F. I find that it tastes better at the colder 38, but the aroma really comes alive at proper cellar temperatures.

Flesje gedeeld door Benzai tijdens KV. Roodbruin helder bier met matig schuim. Weinig aroma, ietsje fruitig. Smaak is iets rokerig en karamel achtig. Weinig nasmaak.

Fles gedronken bij Benzai op KV. Het is een donker bruin bier met een rode gloed. Het heeft een medium schuimkraag. Het heeft een moutige geur. De smaak is zacht gebrand mout en caramel achtig.

330ml bottle at a tasting. Pours clear but dark and almost opaque. Almost no head, minimal lacing and no bead. Dark greyish brown in colour. Complex aromas of dark fruit, vanilla, chardonnay, leathery yeast and faint caramel. Smooth in the mouth with some immediate sourness, and bitterness, releasing some fruity wine flavours. Overall, lighter on the palate than some Abbey Dubbels, but still a solid example of the style.

33 cl bottle. creamy tan head. Dark reddish brown color. Lovely caramel malt nose has berry-like notes. Soft, supple dark malt flavor is filled with notes of dried fruit, plums, brown sugar and cola. Silky, soft mouthfeel. Finish has hints of black tea, toast and light spice. Delicious.

Bottle of 33cl, in a Trappist glass; from the fridge. Really a good beer : nor special nor with a wonderful taste; but a well-balanced aroma and taste, and a beautiful brown colour on top. We're in front of a good Abbey beer, with some chestnut/cocoa sweet taste (but not to sweet) thanks to the yeast. Go try it !

Bottle from Super Liquor IV in Ann Arbor. Aroma is raisins, wood, yeast, spice, dry, nice. Appearance is reddish broken, light brown head, opaque. Taste is dark fruit, wood, raisins, figs, roast, super dry, spice, excellent. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, medium carbonation, spritzy but not overly so, dry dark fruit wood spice aftertaste. Overall, these monks sure know their way around Dubbels. Quite good.
