St. Bernardus Prior 8 is a traditional Abbey Ale brewed in the classic "Dubbel" style of Belgium’s Best Abbey Ales. It has a ruby to purple color, smooth, creamy richness of texture that is almost oily, and a malt-fruit complexity reminiscent of coconut. It finds the perfect balance between sweet, bitter and malty tastes. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Pours with a creamy, lasting head. Color, like weak coffee. Unbelievable aromas, starting chilled from the fridge with nice fresh hops, and bready malt, warming and evolving to include, vanilla, some chocolate, fruits, mainly banana and cocoanut, also sour mash whiskey. Nice roasted malt flavor, less complex than the aroma, but nice - sweet, fruity, lightly bitter with come coffee and a noticeable alcohol presence. Really, really nice though not as luscious in the mouth as the Westy/Rocheforts these St Bernardus beers have been compared to.

Bottle from Smak Piwa. Beer served in Goblet Glass. Pours very dark brown. Thick and small head. Aroma is dry dark fruits, trouffe, mushroom, slightly plummy. Taste is dry and semi sweet, caramel, smooth alcohol, dry processed plums and cherries. Quite smooth.

Brown colour, big head that soon fades to a thin layer that last all the while. Creamy tear lace. Aroma of dark fruits, chocolate, hazelnuts. Medium to full body, rich and creamy palate. Good carbonation. Taste is similar to the smell: chocolate, dark fruits, licorice notes.Good, but not the best from St. Bernardus.

Bottle from the Elm Tree, Cambridge. Very dark brown with a nice big creamy khaki head. Lots of natural carbonation. Now, here’s the thing. I just don’t get a lot of aroma from this. Notes of figs, chocolate, marshmallows and smoke, but it’s missing that amazing heady nose that a good Dubbel normally has. The taste however is out of this world: sweet, fruity, and deep. A hoppy bitterness keeps the balance, and there are notes of salted plum in the aftertaste. Carbonation is heavy but not too overpowering. Excellent but maybe just a shade short of a top, top Dubbel for me.

Mahogany color, medium sized beige head. Aromas of yeast, caramel, dried fruits, raisins and peaches. Taste of raisins, fudge, caramel, yeast and butter with a creamy finish. 7-4-7-3-14.

Bottled, tnx team ! Brown color, frothy head, looks great. Liquirice nose. Aroma has plum, caramel, and lots of brown sugar. Flavour is sweet, alcholic stingy, aromatic. Dry alcoholic finish.

Wonderful Belgian. Richer version of the 6. Dark fruits, caramel, brown sugar. Surprising lively carbonation. Dessert aspect of creamy sweetness, but with a dry finish. Excellent stuff.

330ml bottle bought at ICBeer in Kwun Tong.

Looks: Clear ruby brown colour with a thin ring of dirt-like yeast sediments; Two and a quarter finger head with crumpety creamy off-white foam which lasts for 4 minutes; Beautiful sticky lacing with fizzy small carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant and sweet dark malt, with strong caramel, strong sticky toffee, strong plums, dark fruits, strong banana, vanilla, cinnamon, floral, candi sugar, cloves, spices, bread, strong Bel yeast and grass. Big and beautiful!

Taste: Medium sweet dark malt, with strong metallic, strong caramel, strong toffee, plums, Cola, floral, strong molasses, spices, strong herbs, light bread, strong Bel yeast, lemon, mid to strong bitter hops and grass.

Body: Full body. Very slick and creamy palate.

Mouth Feel: Solid dark maltyness in a thick background. Very smooth and creamy! Metallic but not nagging, full of rich caramel, toffee and Cola, followed by strong plums and spices. Quite flowery with strong candi sweetness. Very Bel yeasty with expressive herbal bitter hops and ended with strong lemon. Excellent!

Hoppiness: Cinnamon, floral, spices and grass in nose. Floral, spices, strong herbs, lemon, and grass in taste; Bitterness is quite strong for a lasting, high astringent sweet-bitter lean dark malty finish.

After Taste: Fairly dry. Herbal hoppy and bitter to mouth.

Comments: This is definitely a step up from the already nice Prior 6, with thick body, good looks, big Bel yeasty fruity spicy aroma and a perfectly balanced sweetness and herbal hoppiness. Unlike Westvleteren 8 which is more booze-forwarded, this is all about malty hearty characters, like a little brother of Abt 12. Highly enjoyable!
