4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
This is a shade or two paler than Marzen. The aroma is distinct and reminiscent of good chocolate. The brewers at St. George say the malt-bill contains about 3% peated barley; a small amount but it makes all the difference in flavor. It is thick in the mouth. This beer is unique, filling, and great with heavy red meat - especially lamb. Best obtained straight from the taproom in a growler.
Poured into a thistle, the appearance was a ruddy burnt orange to almost brown color with a finger and a half’s worth of white foamy head that dissipated fairly quick. Mild stringy lace.
The aroma had a touch of caramel to toffee malts up front playing with some herbal/peat character and then biscuits and then smoke. Decent leathery to earthiness underneath.
The flavor leans towards the caramel/toffee malt side. Peats and smoke then combine. Biscuits and herbal qualities come back to slide into the aftertaste and roll into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Low carbonation. Mild ABV, still seems appropriate.
Overall, decent scotch ale that I could have again. Thanks Ted. mike5326 (1756) - virginia beach, Virginia, USA - DEC 31, 2015
Poured from a bottle. Clear golden color, medium white head. Syrup hops aroma. Medium smokey malt flavor with a medium finish.

Mild aroma of spice, pours a a clear orange brown color with a short lasting white head. A mild taste of spice and gingerbread. Watery body with a spice finish. hopscotch (11161) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - APR 10, 2013
Bottle... Clear light copper ale with a creamy white head. The bouquet is a meaty, malty mélange of smoked pale malts, caramel and other medium-roast malts. Medium-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and tingly carbonation. The flavor offers nice toffee, caramel and smoked malts, but it’s bittered a bit too assertively for the style. Finishes bittersweet and a tad metallic. Borders on a Marzen-based rauchbier. Nice overall. Bottle courtesy of darkguardian! DCLawyer (2846) - Falls Church, Virginia, USA - MAR 24, 2013
Bottle->shaker. Pours a dirty brown, like sewage. Ugliest beer ever. Aroma is faint malt and caramel. Taste is a mess, with coffee, malt, caramel, peat. Not a fan.

Tap. Pours clear amber with a medium off-white head and some lacing. Aroma is caramel and peat dominated, with some fruit notes as well. Flavor is about the same, plus some yeast and vanilla. Light metallic bitterness on the finish. Light body. Interesting, not great. Elwood (3336) - Leesburg, Virginia, USA - MAY 17, 2012
Serving: 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine Sterling. It pours a deep copper color with a huge head of off white foam. A touch overcarbonated I would say. The nose has fusels, a varnish note, and touch of malt. The flavor has a bit of light caramel, an off metallic bite, a little malt sweetness. This one isn’t so good. Light to medium body with average carbonation leading to an off bitter metallic finish. Skip this one. jgb9348 (6326) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - FEB 20, 2012
Crisp copper coloured body with a orange and almost amber glow with a very thin, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of caramel, apples, pears, malt, bananas and a decent amount of yeast - no scotchie flavours at all. Medium-bodied; Assertive chewy malt flavour with a slight peat note, some light sugars and a hint of pit fruits. Aftertaste shows some fruity flavours with bananas and pears coming out the most and a hint of the yeast and alcohol. Overall, not horrible, but the flavours don’t work for the style and only shows a belgian ale or perhaps a tripel. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 09-November-2011 for US$1.99 sampled at home in Washington on 20-February-2012. nuplastikk (6313) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - JAN 2, 2012
Sample from a 12oz bottle. Filtered orange-brown, thin off white head. Decent Scotch Ale in most respects, with some figgy grape in the aftertaste. Clean malt tones. OK, rather unique.
