Happened upon this small ’long bar’ just affront the Rathaus and oddly aside a lovely ice-creamery. As far as I know this is the only kneipe in Bamberg to serve Buttenheim’s St. Georgen Bräu vom fass so I’m glad for the sly stop-off. TV set up, die Niederlande playing, and dismally qualifying in die welt tasse, and this one served in ceramic steins, felt close to heaven in the sunny afternoon it was.
From the grey stein lip a rocky beige head erupted and held. Beyond it, with a swift-blow of air, a dark, tawny chestnut body wavered to the light. It seemed quite clear or bright. It laced well down the stein, something I rarely see. Woody, fresh harvest nose, mixed grains mingle, quite complex and hard to describe. It smells like a damp barnyard somehow meeting the Autumn rain out in a cleared paddock. It tickles and has just a touch of sweeter more notable links to cocoa with a shy edge, I suppose, of toasted malts. Big, complex toasted and roasted malt palate. Quite nutty, even salty, but honestly deep and indescribable, even as a brewer myself. Notes for this read as - licks of raw blackened coffee beans, minor shine of sticky date pudding, rye bread and pumpernickel, dusty chocolate and fresh cracked Munich malt. In the back it is dry and woody, finish peaks off of a smooth malt bitterness before a long, smoky, big toasted malt swallow. This was...- oh’ (if I could swear now, it would suit!) - must say this was a complex Dunkel, one you’d truly become inventive trying to describe. Lovely stuff, Niederlande qualified, I was shouted the next few rounds, life is gut, ich liebe schön Bamberg und besonders ein Buttenheim Brauerei. Lovely, simply lovely!!!
Deep chestnut color. Smells like I have walked into a brewery while the brewing is going on. Huge, unfermented dark malt notes. Big chocolate malty mouth with cherries and dark fruit. Very dry. Light brown colour. Nice liquid bread aroma with light spice. Very toasty, spicy and very rich. Off-dry finish.
-pours a clear copper-red with a medium,foamy,offwhite head
-low carbonation visible
-medium to high bitterniss for the style
-light to medium body
One of the few Lagers that actually get better the longer it stays in the glass.

Bottle: Deep amber coloured, thin, but lacing, stable off-white head; complex aroma: fruit (raisins, almost port-wine), molasses and sweet dark malt; light sweetish, but mainly dry (chocolatey-)bitter flavour, light to medium bodied; toasted sweet-malt and dry chocolatey bitterness in the finish. Tastes like a tamed Doppelbock, an extremely flavoursome beer !!!

Very deep amber colour, big white foamy/creamy head. Aroma is a bit spicy, malty, as well as wooden and hoppy. Flavour is wooden, a bit herbal and spices and has a rather strong malty body. Rather fullbodied and refreshing.
Bottle shared outside the brewery on day 2 of the Bamberg Jolly of January 2014. Pours clear, rich gold with a frothy, off-white head. Nice toasted bread action, light toffee, ripe fruits, caramelised sugars. Light bodied with average carbonation. Moderately crisp on the finish, with notes of toasted cereal and caramel. draft at eulenspiegel in bamberg. dark caramel colored body, clear. rich and tangy, sharp and slightly sweet with toffee and sweetened vanilla malt and a hint of cocoa. much like a dunkler bock but hoppier like an altbier. rich, tangy, crisp, malt-driven, snappy and sharp. wonderful.
