COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A dark lager with an exceptionally fine taste which is talked about with recognition and admiration. Staropramen Dark is exceptional for its calming, full-bodied, sweetish caramel taste with gentle, hopsy bitterness. It is a taste you will never forget.

Great beer but not a knockout. Ultimately not as memorable as the Velkopopvicky Kozel Cerny beer, which is still the best Czech dark beer. Kozel Cerny (dark) did just win the gold medal at the Belgian world beer competition in 2005. Staropramen is great but not as great as Kozel. Compare them and you will understand.

Clearish dark brown color, with redish hints. Medium to high. Fruity aroma, some buttery aromas (maybe diacetyl), caramel, some minerality, Starts sweet, with a good dose of caramel. Finishes roasty and sweet, with just a bit of hops. Some chocolate. Quite bright for its color. Light bodied as well. Maybe a bit watery. Very drinkable though. Not too bad, but doesn’t blow me away.

Canned. Nothing much is going on here: a simple thin and watery dunkel. Drinkable tho.

Piana średnio obfita, średnie pęcherzyki. Barwa mahoniowa, czerwone przebłyski. W aromacie czekolada, kola, chleb razowy. Generalnie ciemne słody. Średnie nagazowanie. Piwo taniniczne, ściągające. Wodniste.

Version brewed at Borsodi, bottled at Palermó Pizzéria, Szigetvár. Our organizers had fucked up so we ended up not being able to go to any grocery store during our trip to Hungary, so we ended up at the only open place in central Siget/Szigetvár, where I got this (faced with a limited Borsodi-driven selection) as the least bad choice. Turned out, shockingly, that it was a new rate too, so here goes. Red-copper, clear body with an off white head. Light mild caramel aroma. Dry caramel taste, slightly sweetish, vaguely roasty. A bit soapy. OK little dark lager.

Enjoyed: Poured from a bottle into a lager glass. Appearance: Dark, brown colour, with medium dirty-white foam. Aroma: Very gentle aroma of barley and caramel. Palate: Medium body, gentle carbonation. Taste: Gentle sweetness. Roasted malt. Caramel, chocolate. Medium bitter aftertaste. Overall impression: Very enjoyable and tasty. Alias made in Zagreb Brewery is much worse.

On tap, Chateau Dobris. Actually not that dark brown, hints of red, colour a bit washed out looking. Thick white foam. Great malty flavours, malt loaf, fruit, bread. Nice mouthfeel from carbonation. No hop flavour to speak of, but good bitterness to balance; much more drinkable than say the Kozel dark. Decent.
