Our Hefeweizen is a faithful version of the traditional Bavarian wheat beer. Hefe is the German word for 'yeast' and weizen means 'wheat'. This beer is made with 40% wheat malt and is brewed with a special yeast that tends to stay in suspension, giving the beer its cloudy appearance. Bavarians are so convinced of the healthful qualities of this yeasty brew that doctors there are known to prescribe two Hefeweizens a day to feeble patients. The yeast used for this brew also imparts its unique spicy, clovey flavour. Some people even detect a light banana flavour. All of these wacky flavours are the natural 'signature' left by this specific yeast strain during its fermentation of the beer and no additional spices are added.

Draught at the brewpub
Cloudy blond color. The aroma is not inviting, a bit smelly, stagnant water, plastic, but also some banana. The mouthfeel is dry but smooth; the wheat flavor is delicate, followed by strong banana character; the bitterness is very low, which accentuates the sweetness; the spicy character is also a bit low.
Not too bad, quite easy but pleasant.

Has no aroma to speak of. Appearance is a modest foggy yellow body. Flavour is an awful weak detergent with bleach notes. Cloying mouthfeel. This is definitely not a good hefeweizen.

On tap.Something seriously wrong with this one, which I sampled at the brewpub. The glue aroma and flavour mixed with banana made this really taste like artificial flavour was added, though it may not be the case, could just be a screw-up with this batch. But no way was the beer I had today an 87 percentile heffe, the main characteristic was glue. My fellow patrons agreed without any prodding. Chlorophenol overload!

Draft at Banana Leaf, Vancouver. Traditional Bavarian style hef, reminded me a fair bit of Weihenstephaners. That said, pours a slightly cloudy golden color, with minimal aroma, medium body, finish is sweet, heavy on the esters. Not outstanding or even that original, but definitely not bad.
