3.5
Oakes (17274) - Vancouver, British Columbia, - MAY 1, 2005
UPDATED: MAY 27, 2007 It’s been two years and several batches since I last rated this. Hazy golden-copper colour with a loose thin head. Grapefruit aroma with slightly toasty malts, lemon and breadcrust. Very dry - malts are a shade thin up front, salvaged when the woody, grapefruity hops show up at the end. Basically the same brew.

original rating
Hazy copper-straw colour. Woody, toasty, citric aroam. A little thin, but moderate woody bitterness. Balanced, woody, quite tasty. 4-7-7-4-14 = 3.6

Tap at brewpub. Pours a nice golden with a small white head. Nose very citrus and caramel malt driven. Taste had a nice fruit driven hoppy bitterness. Nice mouthfeel. Best Canadian beer so far. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draught at the brewpub
Light amber color. The aroma is very nice, hoppy, yellow fruits, a bit jammy. Very good malt and toffee flavor, with a pleasant dry and smooth mouthfeel, strong hopping, fresh, with resins and pleasant citrus character, bergamot and cedar too. Long final.
Very good.

Seasonal pint on tap at the brewpub poured a pleasing golden color with a finger and a half of white head and some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is citrusy hops. Taste is a bold hoppy bitterness with lots of citrus and some earthy notes with a light malty sweetness. Medium body and some nice carbonation leave the palate satisfied. This is a damn good IPA.

[on tap at brewpub] Citrusy aroma of lemon and grapefruit. Hazy, light copper with a thin, lacy cover. Surprisingly smooth light caramel flavour behind fruity and citrusy hops. Very well balanced with bitternness and hops flaovur. Medium body, moderate carbonation, slightly bitter finish.

No notes on this, only numbers....however it was a gorgeous day to sit on the patio watching people.

Draft at brewery: After being underwhelmed by Steamworks’ other beers, I had high hopes for this "hoppy" one, but it didn’t quite do it for me. It wasn’t bad, I should say, just not very exciting. Had the best hop aroma of them all, with flowers and pine. But it was just too light and mellow and one dimensional on all fronts, including malts and hops. That said, it was probably my favorite among the beers I tried.

draft @ Alibi Room , Vancouver. Listed as an APA. Solid beer. PNW hop filled aroma. Solid bitterness in the flavor, well balanced, this would stand up to almost any American APA out there
