A solid and affordable release puts Steel Toe squarely on my radar for future visits to the Minneapolis area. Better examples may exist but few blend its balance of flavor with a price point that doesn’t stretch the budget. If you are in the area give at least one of their drafts / bottles a shot.
Aroma / Appearance - A fluid ebony black base seeps from the bottle into the bottom of the glass like molten char. Mocha head dances on top along with slick legs. Chocolate, roast coffee, dry malts, and sweet hazel shimmer in the air as they balance a light roasted texture against the bitterness of fresh hops.
Flavor / Palate - Black coffee with a splash of skim milk immediately singes the tongue with a tease of malts. Bittersweet dark chocolate unfolds over the course of subsequent sips. A refreshing dry finish leaves traces of wood and hops. The total package drinks easily for a 7% ABV release with only a handful of small things keeping it from being truly world class.
Draft at Happy Gnome. Pours dark brown with tan head. Nose is cocoa and roast. Taste is coffee, powdered cocoa. Nice dryness in the aftertaste. Ericular (1037) - Minnesota, USA - MAY 6, 2015

Bottle... Pours black with a small, wispy, khaki head. Good retention. The aroma is robust and big-time roasty, offering notes of fudge, pouch tobacco, a shot of espresso and a hint of blackstrap molasses. Full-bodied with busy carbonation. The flavor is deeply roasted, rich and robust - espresso, dark chocolate, chocolate crème and vanilla. Roasty, charred finish with a kiss of mildly sweet chocolate. Bottle courtesy of BVery! Bottle, pours dark black with small cream head. Notes are chalk, milk cocoa, nuts, bitter, mouthfeel is so rich and layered. Great bitter stuff from steel toe. radarsock (1223) - Massachusetts, USA - DEC 3, 2014
650mL bottle supplied by Stine - many thanks! To long-stemmed white wine glass, it pours a cordovan-tinted dark brown/black combination with which a trim beige head half a finger in length stood. Aromas of almond butter, roasted barley, charcoal, pine needles, aloe, coffee syrup, American yeast, and grilled corn. Tastes the same with the addition of milk chocolate, birch bark, earl grey tea, and stale black licorice candy. Burnt rubber, spent grain, and wet cardboard experienced by swallow. Chewy and interestingly flavorful. My first Steel Toe had been a success. deyholla (12253) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - NOV 21, 2014
On tap at the brewery. Pours black with a mocha brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma has chalky dark grains with touches of roasted malts and chocolate. Flavor has lots if dark grains and roasted malts with touches of molasses, bitter chocolate and a hint of pine.
