RATINGS: 36   MEAN: 2.88/5.0   WEIGHTED AVG: 2.88/5   ABV: -
A full-bodied, all-malt lager, with a pleasant kiss of the hop, it is a faithful rendition of the European light amber lagers of old. A 1994 GABF gold medal winner, it is smooth and satisfying while achieving a complex and delightful balance between malt and hops.

Clear golden, white head. Corny malty aroma. Corny sweet malty flavor. Hops well hidden. Rather bland.

This beer is pretty terrible. Metallic malty/grainy taste with no hop aroma. Yellow fizzy and very bland. Yuck.

Sampled draft at the Harrisburg Brewer’s Fest. Boring beer. Nice malt taste. That was it.

Pours amberish. Aromas of malt, hops. Sweet malty taste with Slight hoppyness at the finish. A nice beer.

Fantastic color - Dark gold, copper/brown, clear with a short fizzy head. Too much carbonation at first - prickly. Palate was not very thick, but had a nice malt - sweet, thin caramel. As it warmed, it got a little bit medicinal.

Bottled. Poured an amber color with a good sized white head of foam. I'm not a big lager lover, however this one had a hoppy / malty nose which followed through in the taste. Normally when I think of lagers, I think of the commercially produced crap from the big breweries. This beer breaks free of that mold and is really good. I will definitely be drinking this again.

Vac (2445) - San Diego, California, USA - AUG 18, 2003
Pours with a golden body topped by a medium thick white head with good lacing. Slightly sweet and flowery, well balanced aroma leaning slightly towards malty. Slightly sweet but mostly bitter hoppy flavor with flowery notes and a good malt balance. The finish is slightly sweet and malty. Light bodied and smooth with a slight dryness.

Hard to get too enthused about this lager, though I was intrigued that it's such an old brand and wanted to give it a shot. All in all, it's an acceptable lager with a slight hint of sourness. It has notes of wheatiness, which is unusual in a lager. You can taste the yeast, which is a good thing. As good as Yuengling Traditional is, it's too fizzy, so I'd prefer this 1857 if I had to choose.

Maybe Lion Brewery Inc. best product, brown/orange in color with a thin tan foam. Smells floral, with a hint of hops. Taste is smooth with a dry hops, and a sweet malt finish. This is a local jem, around the holiday's they run a special 2 cases of 1857 for $18.57, sweet deal.
