And i thought Victorys all malt lager was good. Very confusing beer. Cloudy yellow lager, however the cloudiness was only the top half of the beer, for the bottom was a clear yellow. Aroma was yeasty and malty, head was small but lingering. Tasted like warm bread... very strong yeasty flavor... excellent i thought. Very light hop finish. So easy to drink and so very good. My new favorite lager. mribm (462) - Ocala, Florida, USA - NOV 1, 2003
Bottled. Poured an amber color with a good sized white head of foam. I'm not a big lager lover, however this one had a hoppy / malty nose which followed through in the taste. Normally when I think of lagers, I think of the commercially produced crap from the big breweries. This beer breaks free of that mold and is really good. I will definitely be drinking this again. UPDATED: FEB 14, 2004 I one day picked this hidden gem up at the beer distributor for slightly cheaper than Yuengling Lager...and to my surprise it tasted better than Yuengling Lager. Nice Amber Color, very nice maltiness, a little hint of hops, overall a well balanced flavor... Norton (333) - Southside, Richmond, Virginia, USA - AUG 1, 2002
A really nice lager. Outstanding off tap!! Almost wheatish tasting.... I dig the maltiness and semi-sourdoughy flavor. Unique, no doubt. Only place I have ever had this is at Zeno's @ Penn State. Ah, I remember many a night slamming pitchers of this delightful stuff..... porter103499 (7) - USA - APR 19, 2002 does not count

Hard to get too enthused about this lager, though I was intrigued that it's such an old brand and wanted to give it a shot. All in all, it's an acceptable lager with a slight hint of sourness. It has notes of wheatiness, which is unusual in a lager. You can taste the yeast, which is a good thing. As good as Yuengling Traditional is, it's too fizzy, so I'd prefer this 1857 if I had to choose. NJBeerman013 (1054) - Hamilton Twp., New Jersey, USA - MAR 7, 2002
Very good lager. Clear amber color. Very malty, which surprised me a bit. I like the flavor balance. I still don't think it beats a Yuengling. Kevbo99 (149) - Dunmore, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 1, 2002

Pours amberish. Aromas of malt, hops. Sweet malty taste with Slight hoppyness at the finish. A nice beer. NYHarvey (2153) - New York, New York, USA - JAN 3, 2006

Aroma is fresh and grassy with a good wiff of sweet malts. Golden color with a thick white head. Flavor is mostly grassy/grainy with a bit of low bitterness hops and not overly sweet malts. Really not a bad pale lager. Even has a mildly citric kick in the finish.
