Clear red brown beer, fuzzy beige head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: lots of milk chocolate, overripe fruits, honey, touch of mocha, cocoa powder, pretty nauseating unpleasant. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet start, malty, honey, chocolate, some overripe banana, a little bitter. Aftertaste: overripe fruits, little bitter, lots of sweetness, some chocolate, mocha. Bit weird, this one. I don’t get it why you would even want to make beer sweeter by using stevia plants. Makes absolutely no sense...

The dubbel in this sugar free series and therefore the follow-up to Nog Eéntje, the sugar free beer for diabetics I remember from another era, developed by and in collaboration with the brother of Dirk Naudts, the man who started the now legendary ’Proef’brouwerij. Also sweetened with extracts from the South American stevia plant - I remember owning one of those a long time ago - and containing only 0.3% residual sugar if their website is to be believed. Thickly cobweb-lacing, off-white, dense and moussy head, remaining almost completely closed for a very long time, over a lightly hazy deep mahogany brown beer with reddish-coppery hue. Aroma of raw brown sugar, children’s medicine or indeed aspartame (the precursor to stevia, in a certain way), chalk, caramel candy, ’Koetjesreep’ or Nesquik ’ersatz’ powder chocolate, red cabbage, candied date, soap, antacid tablets, mud, stewed pear, dried plum, apple sauce, industrial honey. Sweet, honeyish onset, candied date, apple sauce and a dash of banana with a dim sourish undercurrent for balance but still a bit cloying, the cloyingness quickly washed away by a fizzy, further souring carbonation effect, a tad overcarbonated for a dubbel but still smooth and slick, if not a bit resiny in mouthfeel. Caramelly malt sweetness prevails in the middle with slight nutty hints here and there as well as a sharper, bit grainy undertone with a thin metallic edge to it somewhere; leads to a malty finish with still a lot of this residual sweetness - feeling much, much more than 0,3% actually - as well as this slight metallic accent hanging around, some earthy and spicy but ’aromatically deaf’ hop bitterness, some warming, ’jenever’-like alcohol (which should not at all be this obvious in any beer below 7-8%) and a vague echo of this chalky and magnesium-like, near-chemical, bitterish undertone that was there from the start. I remember Stevia leaves (when the plant was still available as a plant on the Belgian market - thanks to the same guy who commissioned Nog Eéntje and, after that, this very beer) having that same medicinally-magnesium-like bitterish aftertaste and this weird, not all too pleasant side-flavour has been well communicated here, no less so than in the tripel version. Sweet dubbel with the same magnesium-like side notes as its stronger blonde counterpart and that weird side flavour is exactly what ruins this for me - and probably for a lot of other beer lovers as well. I understand the good intentions - as well as the less commendable commercial ones - of this range, but the combination of overt sweetness (Stevia is a lot sweeter than even sugar) with this unpleasant medicinal bitter side flavour without too many hops to intercept this, seems completely out of balance and to me personally is rather indegistible, though admittedly I did expect even worse from this. Still: this is basically the same beer as that Nog Eéntje, with a somewhat tweaked recipe and a tad less alcohol, so I will base my rating here on a comparison with its own ancestor - resulting in an ex aequo.

Bottle shared. Cloudy brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of caramel, malt, toffee and light overripe dark fruit. Flavour is heavy sweet. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

(bottle, 33cl) Cloudy,brown colour with a ruby shine and a beige and loose mid-sized foamy head. Dark malty, slightly roasty aroma with nutty notes and hints of chocolate. Moderately sweet flavour, medium to light bodied with a modest carbonation. Roasty malt character with mildly burnt notes, caramel, chocolate and very subtle notes of dried fruits; sweet and quite sticky finish with notes of chocolate in the aftertaste. Pours clear, caramelly dark brown. Good white head. Smell is sweet, in the lines of a regular dubbel style beer. Taste is caramelly, roasted malts, sharper-than usual sweetness with a clinical sideline ( ether pops into the mind ) . Filthy , typical stevia sweetness in the back. Don’t know about this one. Starts interesting, than turns bad... Ok MF and carbo

Thanks to Tom. Hazy brown colored beer with small off-white head and no carbonation visible. Malty coffee hinted aroma. Full sparkling palate. Finish is sweet coffee mucca.

Donkerbruin bier met beige schuimkraag. Mout en caramel in de neus. Zoet in de mond met gebrande mouttoets. Bitterige afdronk. Voor mij een geslaagd Stevia-experiment.
