Caramel, sweet malt, I think is how Scottiesh ales used to be. Too sweet, lacks a bitter edge. Borresteijn (7078) - Zaandam, NETHERLANDS - NOV 3, 2010

[cask at the Guildford Arms, Edinburgh] As a style, I usually struggle with 80 shillings – which is a shame as it’s one of the definitive Scottish beer styles. Stewart’s is one of the best of the bunch as it doesn’t go overboard with the sweet caramel that can make other examples too cloying. Deep brown in appearance, with a slightly off-white head, there are aromas of sweet molasses and malt from the glass. Quite well-balanced flavours, some sweetness but as I said, thankfully not too much. Decent malt aftertaste as well Oakes (17676) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - OCT 13, 2010
Bright brick amber. Caramelly nose with diacetyl in there as well. Soft caramel character. This is a very mellow beer. Sweet finish. I can see where they’re going but it’s not my favourite. JohnRMurdoch (4871) - Glasgow, SCOTLAND - OCT 8, 2010

Cask @ Bow Bar. Dark ruby-brown with a sparkler head. Aroma is rich berries and slight butter, like a berry crumble with a cookie crust. Soft palate. Very nice but surprisingly fruity. Great malt character. Long flavors. Bread crust, dark bread malts. Lots of dates and prunes. Sort of like a milder version of sticky toffee pudding.
