Cask conditioned at The Stockbridge Tap, Edinburgh. Chestnut with cream head. Malty, sweet Scottish ales used to be the norm, before the god of hops intervened. This is really quite a decent version, some toffee caramel, a bit of roastiness, it’s ok. Blairgus (4613) - California, USA - MAY 17, 2011
17 may 2011, tap. Med nut brown colour, clear, no bubbles, thin tan head. Rather faint nose of rich malt and cherries. Med/thin body, faintly fizzy and oily. Rich sweet malt and warm cherry flavour. Caramel, sweet malt, I think is how Scottiesh ales used to be. Too sweet, lacks a bitter edge.

[cask at the Guildford Arms, Edinburgh] As a style, I usually struggle with 80 shillings – which is a shame as it’s one of the definitive Scottish beer styles. Stewart’s is one of the best of the bunch as it doesn’t go overboard with the sweet caramel that can make other examples too cloying. Deep brown in appearance, with a slightly off-white head, there are aromas of sweet molasses and malt from the glass. Cask. Pours a copper color with a medium white head. The aroma is sweet caramel, some dusty fruit. The flavor is rich sweet malts, caramel, dry only a light bitterness. Very drinkable.
