5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
I have three favorite Pils: Sly Fox, Palaner Pils, and now I’ve added Stiegl to the list. I can change on a whim but as of this minute I have to rate Stiegl the best of the crop.
I seen a lot of bad ratings on this site for this beer but Pils is a delicate beer and depending on the freshness it can be either great or horrible. I have had Sly Fox and Paulaner that were somewhat old but not past their prime and both were very substandard. One had the aroma of smelly socks and the other just seem to have lost its hop flavor.
I was fortunate enough to be able to pick some some fresh Stiegl Pils at Pletcher’s in State College, PA and they were giving out free glasses to boot. What a deal.
I will say this, on almost every pour, the head was rich and creamy when poured into a clean Stiegl Cup (as they call it) and you have to wait a few minutes for it to die down before you can add anymore. For those who complained about the head, either you had a dirty glass or got some old beer.
This is the way German beer used to be until they started to lighten it up and water it down like the Bud’s and Miller’s of the world. Of course, this isn’t a German Beer, but an Austria and perhaps that partially explains why it is so good.
Created a monstrous sizing of foaming while an off tinted yellow slightly hazed liquid rests below. Nose is mild and smells of European malts and yeast and could be the best smelling pilsners I have come across because of how developed the character aroma. The flavor is heavy with malts, grains, and wheat tastings and finishes semi-sweet with a sticky foam flavor aftertaste. koleminer20 (3597) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - JUN 8, 2017
330 mL bottle that is probably in the coolest shape I’ve seen in a while. It’s like a grenade waiting to happening. We enjoyed about 6 or 7 of these each among many Kalashnikov shots. It was a fascinating time at Bar Ernst Fuchs. The pour on this is a thinner clear golden straw with a thick white head that wisps down with some soapy lace left behind. The aroma is very pilsner like. There is a good maltiness to it, a cleanliness, a strong wheat, and then a hint of metallic sweetness on the finish. It’s pretty good, but it’s not my thing. The flavor is just as sweet. Definite pilsner with a light wheatiness and a strong sweet malt. It’s not terrible, but there are many better things. The mouth feel is light and watery with a soft carbonation and a lingeringly sweet malt finish. It’s just something that I can do without. mlady (350) - Prievidza, SLOVAK REPUBLIC - MAY 11, 2017

Tap en ook wel eens flesje, beide op vakantie in Oostenrijk. Veel te alledaags, vrij zwak pils. Industrieel. thejackpacker (448) - East Sussex, ENGLAND - FEB 23, 2017

I drank this beer at several oportunities in different trip in this lovely country. It is a classical pils, well balanced and perfect during the summet after a long walk. The color is yellow and gold, average carbonation, thin and white foam, fairly bitter, hop, herbal side, malty, next one please to stay healthy!!!!!! From backlog. Pale yellow with thick frothy head. Light malt aroma (biscuit). Buttery malt with hop finish. Light bodies. Everything one would want in a pils.
