FlacoAlto (4176) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - JUL 31, 2012
Sampled on tap at the Brewpub; July 2012
The beer is a hazy gold color and is topped by a thin, pale head. The aroma has hay like grain notes to it, as well as a spicy pepper character and phenolic notes. Light fruit aromatics are joined by an earthy, lightly musty character. This is actually fairly yeasty smelling and even has a hint of baby puke to it (though this last description is mostly good).

Up front there is a fruity character, that might be somewhat from hop contributions, but is definitely from the yeast character; mostly I taste flavors reminiscent of pears and melon. There is a touch of bitterness in the finish and there are also some medicinal phenolic notes that help to add a bit to this beer. There is a peppery spice character to this beer and it even has a light tartness to it. The beer is lightly sweet tasting, but this is mostly from the fruit esters rather than from residual sugars. The actual body is quite dry and light, but there is enough of it to keep it from being watery.

This is quite nice, I would of course love to see this bottle conditioned, as is true of any Saison that I have. Still the major components I look for in a Saison are here; this is dry, spicy, lightly funky, and has some light, balancing fruit character to it. A more than solid brew that I am happy to be drinking.
