COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
For the first edition of the Stillwater Import Series I traveled to the village of Beerzel, located in the Antwerp province of Belgium. Here I teamed up with brewmaster Jef Goetelen to craft an authentic Belgian version of my liquid interpretation of the Spring season. A recipe originally contrived a few years prior as a collaboration brew with my good friend Paul Kretzer. The base is German barley & wheat, with a touch of Belgian aromatic; accented with grassy hops and an array of spring botanicals (heather, chamomile, lavender, & dandelion). Like a fresh meadow in spring. (now currently brewed at Two Roads in CT)

11.2 oz bottle into a New Belgium goblet. A: Pours a reddish copper color. I like the head on this one: one fingers high, offwhite shade, and superbly creamy. Retention isnt amazing, though, nor is the body itself that attractive. S: Ridiculously herbal. I wont go into detail identifying all of the notes, so Ill just say it smells like some utopian spring day. Allowing it to open up will reveal slight brett touches, as well. T: Its not as dry as I expected. Wheat malt sweetness (similar to a good dunkel) both opens and closes things - with the herbal qualities sandwiching themselves into the middle. Its fairly piny, but not in a hop-derived manner. Also sneaking into the back end are some subtle brett notes. Theres a good balance between the spice profile and the malts. If the aroma made me think of spring, the flavor makes me think Christmas for whatever reason. Ah well, good brew. M: The initial sweetness is cleaned up nicely on the finish, replaced by a prickly, lively sensation. I like the sweet/dry balance here: the sweetness simply balances out some of the potential harshness an overly dry finish could have created. Carbonation is very high, but thats expected from a saison. O: This one doesnt blow me away, however its an easily drinkable brew thats also mildly complex. Id gladly drink this again.

From the bottle. Pours golden with limited irregular foam. Aroma is spiced. Body is medium. Taste is a beautiful mixture of spicing and honey feeling, for a mouthful of taste. Finish is short.

Pours hazy dark orange/amber with a frothy white head. Smells strongly of lavender. The aroma contains lavender and other herbs, fruits, wheat and hops. It tastes medium sweet and very light bitter. The finish is quite short. Medium body and soft carbonation. Interesting, this one.

Sweet sweet malt smell...lots of good diverse aromas...taste is the same with mostly a grape flavor that hangs on for a while...almost no hops...pretty smooth and sweet...decent complexity..taste not as sweet or flavorful with additional sips...palate acclimation hurts it a bit...becomes more like light bubblegum and less complex...but a darn good beer

like 7 up sodapop in the beginning and the end. the middle portion of this brew is warm and full with a bit of warm alcohol. the herbs are noticeable yet refined enough this is a nice beer. it morphs which is interesting it could get a 4 without any qualm from me.

Treated as a saison because thats what I thought it is, this was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a hazy golden yellow color with a light carbonation rising at a nice pace. Fingers worth of white foamy head quickly dissipated. Light lacing slides right on into the beer. The smell takes on sweet bready to floral (lavender) with a sweet earthy/grassiness rubbing shoulders with some sweet crisp herbal leafiness. The flavor takes the previously mentioned flavors and wraps together a fantastic herbal/floral/bready combined sweetness. Definitely brings on that lazy sweet "evening" quality of an aftertaste and subtly sliding on into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a good sessionability about it. Carbonation rides fairly low in this one, still, a subtle stickiness, but not cloying. Overall, good saison, I could come back to.

This is a bright beer. Nice color. Sweet body, pretty crisp. The alcohol is completely masked. A little spice, pretty good.
