Pours murky chestnutty brown with a small, creamy, yellow-beige head. Okay duration as a film. Aroma has raisiny tartness, light toasted caramel, some lactic acid. Doesn’t feel too good. Lowish carbonation, fine creamy palate. Flavour starts with quite a bit of a lactic infection, really. Otherwise a fine toasted caramel base with a mild chocolate note and good dried fruit base. Not impressive.

On tap. Pours dark brown with a tint of red and a creamy beige head. Tart aroma - somewhat lactic? - overripe fruits. Full-bodied, nice interplay between sweet and tart, plenty of fruit, a little roast, a whiff of licorice while the beer finishes as it starts: tart. On cask at the 2011 Max’s Belgian Fest: Pours a transparent dark mahogany with a spotty-lacing airy froth of light tan head. Has a lightly sweet toasty caramel and biscuity malty nose with some fresh woody notes. Starts with good smooth fullness and doughy malts with an authentic grassy hop balance and smooth complex fresh oak before a slightly warming finish with some light fruity notes. Cask at Churchkey. No head, what a surprise. Tan bubbles measly form pathetically at the top of a clear deep maroon pour to remind you this is beer and not Coca-Cola. Aroma is dark cherries and truffles. Heavy dessert sweetness. Taste is heavy syrupy sweet, grenadine, chocolate syrup, boozy cherries. Pretty syrupy, flat palate. dark plum color, thin beige ring with islands of foam. Nose is very cheesy, bit hot with cherry, spice, zesty. Bit more thin cheese in flavor, hop and tea reducing in mid before light butter returns in finish. Thin, contrasting watery and butter notes. Cask (with roasted, caramelized cocoa nibs and vanilla beans). Hazy dark red-brown body with small tan head. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel, some vanilla, raisin, cocoa. Taste is sweet, raisin, chocolate, some vanilla, caramel, alcohol. Sticky medium-full body.
