COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
What is with the paradoxical term ’Black IPA’ anyway? Whatever it is, we do love black beers.. also smoked beers, and of course everyone loves hops these daze.. A complex blend various smoked, caramel and subdued roasted malts lay the base for a combination of piney, dank and (dark) fruity hops.. While there is a lot to contemplate with this beast, just be sure to enjoy it without getting too sucked into its enigmatic composition. Label Design Notes: The layout of the label reinforces the absurdity by recalling both early promotional materials from Braun and Alfred Stieglitz’s photo of Marcel Duchamp’s "Fountain".

UPDATED: JAN 9, 2018 355ml bottle. Black with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, subtle smoke, dark fruits, pine. Taste of roast malts, chocolate, caramel, dark fruits, pine, smoke is so subtle it's barely there except in the finish which is slightly boozy. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, creamy mouthfeel.

Bottle from Beautiful Beers, Bury St Edmunds. Darkest brown with a touch of indigo and a big tan head. Salted plum, woodsmoke, oak, vanilla, a bit too much booze in the aroma but otherwise lovely. Sweet taste with raw cola nut bitterness in the finish. Charcoal, prunes and bitter chocolate in the aftertaste. Special.

Pours jet black, tan head. Aroma is dark roast, fruit, smoke, marmite. Taste is dark, roasted malt up front, leading to a sweet, smokey, bitterness, ending with increasing smoke and bitterness throughout. Lingers for a while.Medium carbonation, medium bodied. Nice!

12 oz. bottle, pours black with a small light brown head. Aroma brings out medium roasted malt, piney hops and a touch of smoke. Flavour is along the same lines, with piney hops, medium roast and light smoke. A bit earthy, with a roasty, peaty finish, with stale coffee grounds. Not very pleasant.

Bottle, Legacy. Dark brown with a thin, bubbly head. On the nose, a mix of smoke, fruity. On the palate, rich and hoppy with lots of smoke, bitterness, chocolate and roast malts. My kind of beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with moderate head. Aromas of lightly smoked malt, chocolate, and the local grocery store, (fresh fruit and veggies). Flavor of dark dry chocolate, subtle but dank piney hopes and lighty smoked malts. Everything in moderation for a very nice dark beer.

355ml bottle @ Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Pours very dark, medium foamy tan head. Aroma of leafy herbal pine. Taste is pretty interesting. The pine seems to work in tandem with the smoked lightly peaty, woody element, underpinned by some herbal moments. Good clarity of flavours. An interesting take on a Black IPA that actually works.

En nariz herbal y torrefacta. Cuerpo medio, oleosa. En boca lupulada, intensa, con notas torrefactas. Compleja. Alcohol bien integrado y el ahumado ni se percibe. Muy buena. En botella. BB 2017-12.

What’s Brewing 2016, day 1. Dark brown body with almost no head. Aroma is roasty and burned with pine and ashes. Tropical fruity taste with caramel and a light smoke note. Not sure if I fancy the smokeness in this one. Dry and crisp bitterness.

Color negro con capa de espuma marrón estilo café de tres dedos de grosor (cremosa y de buena retencion). Carbonatación media. Textura oleosa y untuosa. Aroma a malta torrefacta, tabaco, resina, lúpulo.
