Pours dark brown with some ruby highlights, a decent two fingers of beige head that retains well and leaves behind some good lacing. Aroma is somewhat subdued with slightly tart and roasty notes and hints of light fruit and chocolate. Flavor is muddled but interesting with some roast and chocolate alongside light fruit and grape. A hint of tartness and a musty character. Mouthfeel is soft and medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. I wouldn’t describe this as a schwarzbier because it is rather unique and defies typical style description. The roasted characters don’t meld completely with the Saison elements but still an experiment worth trying and a good beer nonetheless. keanex (1799) - Atco, New Jersey, USA - AUG 13, 2013

Appearance: Black body with a creamy tan head.
Aroma: Figs aromas give a pronounced fruitiness with light roast and cocoa notes.
Taste: Fig is prominent with light roast and cocoa flavors underlying it, cherry is noticed on the finish.
Palate: Light to medium bodied, moderately carbonated.
Overall: Good black lager, pretty much what I expect of the style. Good balance throughout.
UPDATED: AUG 26, 2013 Very dark brown pour half finger tan head. Aroma of yeast, apple cider vinegar, honey, oranges, leather. Tastes of a schwarzbier; smokey, woody, buttery. Saison comes through with some funk. yeastiness and citric acid which blends well with the lactic tang familiar to schwarz. Creamy mouthfeel, but watery finish. This could hold more alcohol with such strong flavors floating around. The flavors work well together, but I feel like complexity is held back a bit under blanketing schwarz dark roasty flavors. This is pretty mindblowing fusion though... must try. BrewBoxer (2636) - New York, New York, USA - AUG 12, 2013
Draft at the growler. Deep black collie with a malty backbone and nice smooth German taste. Really delicious and easy drinking

Near black pour with a thin tan head. Aroma of cocoa, hints of roast and fruity, earthy yeast. Flavor is toast, nutty notes, cocoa, stone fruit, wet limestone, earth, leather, and clove heavy spice. Very strange combination. Light, dry body with a medium strength, sharp and blanketing carbonation. Pretty good overall. Even though this stuff isn’t really amazing or anything I kinda want to try out some Schwarzbier or Dry Stout over Saison, Black and Tan combinations.

Bottle, 12oz. It’s a clear-looking dark brown beer topped by a dense, light beige head. The aroma is rather weak, with some sourish berry notes and a little dark malty touch. A bit low on flavor too, but not bad considering the style. Not that it is very much to style though. Some berry notes and a little bitterness too. The body is medium to full, with a pleasant level of carbonation. Style set as Schwarzbier for this one, strange I think as it’s made with Saison yeast. But anyway, it drinks easy and is quite tasteful too, although a tad ordinary. In a way. 130810 Meilby (11495) - Kristiansand, NORWAY - AUG 10, 2013

tap at The Growler. Apparently a schwarzbier/saison hybrid is much like a black IPA. Nose is lovely hops, citrus peel on the nose. Lots of toasted malts in the body, roasted barley hulls, chocolate, vanilla, plums. Sweet bodied, finishes with some hop resins.
