Bottle from BOTW. Somewhat dull black with a low, fine head. Malty, slightly roasted nose, chocolate, coffee, some saison-like spiciness and orange. This hybrid ale poured wth a minimal tan head over a clear, very dark brown body.
A number of odd hybrid coming out lately, some of which seem questionnable or prove to be less attractive than the conventional components. This "schwarzbier / saison hybrid" sounds like it might fall in this group, but Stillwater succeeds in making a compelling case for this particular innovation. The saison side, being a more powerful variety anyway, does dominate the black beer, but doesn’t enitrely mask its sweet dark roasted character. I found the result to be less challenging and easier drinking than an average saison. Certainly more complex and interesting than the average schwarzbier.

this beer had a dark brown-black pour with a two to three finger light tan and tan colored head, the cover receded to a very thin layer with a ring, this drink was a very clear dark red-ruby when I held the glass up to a light,
there were aromas of roasted and toasted malt, some chocolate, toasted bread and a little caramel, faint coffee and cola like notes,
there was some malt and caramel sweetness,
the flavors were roasted malt, coffee and faint chocolate, some faint caramel in the background, there was some earthy malt and faint spice,
the finish had some roasted malt bitterness and a little malt and molasses sweetness,
it had a light mouth feel that was a little creamy and had average carbonation,
this was a nice beer with a good nose and a flavor that was a little bigger.

At my place with Taylor on a Saturday night. We are staying in because I gotta work in the morning. Aroma is thin light earthy holiness, smooth hay. Taste is soft hoppiness, hay, milt maltiness. Bottle at home in Salisbury, CT - picked up in MA. Pours brown with a large, frothy khaki head that quickly settles into a cream. Pleasant aroma, some yeast, dark bread, dried dark fruits, earth. The flavor, though, isn’t awesome. Minimal sweetness, some tangy dark fruits, charred malts, dirt. Light bodied with lively carbonation. Further mild tangy, dark fruits onthe finish, bittle charred wood, grains, earth, faint baking cocoa. Meh.
