Bottle. Funky roasted malt aroma. Dark black body with thin lasting head, think tan lacing. Flavor begins like a light saison followed by roasted malts and a bitter chocolate, smokey aftertaste. KyotoLefty (10193) - Kyoto, JAPAN - MAR 16, 2014
Bottle from BOTW. Somewhat dull black with a low, fine head. Malty, slightly roasted nose, chocolate, coffee, some saison-like spiciness and orange. Spicy yeast flavor with dark roasted malts and light citrus tartness. Very thin body and somewhat watery. Doesn’t really work imo. Butters (4059) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - MAR 13, 2014
Very dark deep brown pour with mahogany highlights and dark tan head. big roastiness and slight old coffee notes. some leather, but mixed with a slight ’brightness’ of the saison side. Interesting. But nothing amazing. chinchill (4909) - South Carolina, USA - FEB 25, 2014
12 oz bottle, date stamped on neck as bottled in July 2013, served in a Belgian snifter.
This hybrid ale poured wth a minimal tan head over a clear, very dark brown body.
A number of odd hybrid coming out lately, some of which seem questionnable or prove to be less attractive than the conventional components. This "schwarzbier / saison hybrid" sounds like it might fall in this group, but Stillwater succeeds in making a compelling case for this particular innovation. The saison side, being a more powerful variety anyway, does dominate the black beer, but doesn’t enitrely mask its sweet dark roasted character. I found the result to be less challenging and easier drinking than an average saison. Certainly more complex and interesting than the average schwarzbier.
Feel: medium+, lively carbonation in a medium body. BigBeer45 (1522) - Michigan, USA - FEB 24, 2014
Bottle from Champanes,
this beer had a dark brown-black pour with a two to three finger light tan and tan colored head, the cover receded to a very thin layer with a ring, this drink was a very clear dark red-ruby when I held the glass up to a light,
there were aromas of roasted and toasted malt, some chocolate, toasted bread and a little caramel, faint coffee and cola like notes,
there was some malt and caramel sweetness,
the flavors were roasted malt, coffee and faint chocolate, some faint caramel in the background, there was some earthy malt and faint spice,
the finish had some roasted malt bitterness and a little malt and molasses sweetness,
it had a light mouth feel that was a little creamy and had average carbonation,
this was a nice beer with a good nose and a flavor that was a little bigger.

Nice dark brown with foamy tan head. Smells of chocolate malt but has that banana smell too. Smokey but very tinny. Good bitter finish. A little coffee to end it. Lighter body here solidfunk (8838) - Washington D.C., Washington DC, USA - FEB 21, 2014
Not bad, but components don’t come together super well. Why ruin a saison by mixing it with a schwarzbier? Pours black with ok head and lacing. Some hay, citrus. Sour finish. A little roast. Average carbonation. Bottle from Premier Gourmet. GT (10000) - San Diego, California, USA - FEB 19, 2014

>> Thanks ajax for the share. Fizzing out soda foam above clear cola brown pour. Nose is vanilla, candied maraschino cherry. Taste is tangy, heavy lemon, quite tart. Bubbly, soda type finish. Not much to it.
<!> acidic, thin, soda carbonation
At my place with Taylor on a Saturday night. We are staying in because I gotta work in the morning. Aroma is thin light earthy holiness, smooth hay. Taste is soft hoppiness, hay, milt maltiness. This beer is blank slate, it’s alcoholic water that tastes more like nothing than water. Incredibly drinkable. Leighton (21075) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JAN 31, 2014
Bottle at home in Salisbury, CT - picked up in MA. Pours brown with a large, frothy khaki head that quickly settles into a cream. Pleasant aroma, some yeast, dark bread, dried dark fruits, earth. The flavor, though, isn’t awesome. Minimal sweetness, some tangy dark fruits, charred malts, dirt. Light bodied with lively carbonation. Further mild tangy, dark fruits onthe finish, bittle charred wood, grains, earth, faint baking cocoa. Meh.
