3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at Alla Spina. Pours a deep brown, near black with a thin but dense beige head. Nose of dark chocolate, wheat, roast, a faint sour note. Medium to light body, pretty easy drinking, medium carbonation. Sweet malt flavor with a dry finish. Very low astringency
It’s okay. Nothing that’s going to change your life. Looks way better than it tastes. Theres a really subtle roasted toffee aroma and a little funkiness. Taste is like tart watery coffee. Literally like coffee grounds and lemon. I don’t really see the appeal of these Stillwater beers. The more I have the less impressed I’m becoming, especially for the price. ineedbeer (2257) - Oakland, California, USA - APR 19, 2015
Poured from a bottle.
Aroma is moderately roasty with a hint of chocolate and some nice nuttiness. Medium light fruit esters of plum and prune with some light raisin. Medium light pepper phenolics. Some toffee as it warms.
Pours dark brown, not quite black with a large, thick, tan head that steadily recedes. Moderately high lacing and small legs.
Flavor is fairly dry with a light roast and medium light chocolate note. Some toffee and nuts add a bit of complexity. Moderate bitterness. Medium fruit notes of raisin, cherry, plum and prune.
Mouthfeel is light bodied and somewhat watery. Medium high carbonation. Medium low astringency and low alcohol warmth.
Overall, an alright dark saison, but there are definitely better ones out there. The flavor is a bit in complex, but the aroma is better. Could use something to thicken it up a bit too. maekchu (4054) - Hirakata, JAPAN - MAR 13, 2015
Bottle. Dark prunet nose, with light chocolate and a bit of coffee. Dark brown color, thin head, fine tan lace. Light tangy fruit in initial, thin graininess, red grapes, a dry finish. Thin-medium body. Pleasant and light on the fruit. jgb9348 (6482) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - NOV 25, 2014
Dark brown coloured body with lighter brown, amber and violet tints when held up to the light and a thinnish, one single centimetre tall light brown head. Aroma of alcohol, nuts, earth, caramel, grapes and toffee. Light-bodied; Sharp metallic and raisin flavours up front with a subdued yeast note, hints of grass and sour malt and a little sweetness near the end. Aftertaste shows alcohol and light sweetness with the funky yeast and sour notes. Overall, an interesting beer to say the least, but nothing too pleasant - too odd on all levels to be cohesive throughout. Overall, not a horrible option, but definitely not worth searching out for - this one is largely a reputation rating for many people. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Arrowine in Arlington, Virginia on 12-September-2013 for US$2,99 sampled at home in Washington on 24-November-2014, while the bottle was brewed on 01-July-2013.

Aroma is spices, citrus and a hint of dark malts. The flavor is citrus, fruit/berries, dark malts, spices and a sourish/mildly tart finish.

12 oz. bottle. Black Saison per the label. Pours a thick, well retained, beige head, with extensive lacing, over a clear, dark brown (SRM 30) body....nose is cocoa, chocolate, hints of coffee, hints of cola (vanilla, cinnamon), light herbs.....taste is slightly sour to start, then light roasted malts, chocolate tones, hints coffee, lemon peel, light spices, with hints allspice, with light hop bitterness on the finish...mouth feel, light body, no alcohol, low acid, carbonation adds tingle. This is an interesting melange of a Schwarzbier and a Saison. I am not sure the combination really works, because so many features of aroma and flavor are in competition that the beer becomes utterly sloppy. Not every clever idea works out well. BTLD 07/01/13, so fingers crossed. Nose is sweet and floral, dark roast, sweet, chocolate, malty. Dark brown pour with beautiful chestnut poking out from the far edges, an airy tan head. Taste airy, lightly sweet, light yeast, minerals, roast, faint fruit, strongly tart, not really any bitterness to counter the tartness or sweetness. Fullish body. It’s hard from the tartness levels to tell if this is infected as they are within saison boundaries, but the roast/Schwarzbier character is all but gone by this point, but then again, carbonation levels are appropriate. I love the idea of mashing these two styles Luvystypotables (2071) - Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA - AUG 17, 2014
Aroma of malt, wet earth, cocoa and coffee, great looking beer dark brown with a short lasting off white head. Great sour taste with traces of malt, coffee and cocoa. Watery feel with a slightly metallic.
