COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. Vertical Epic 02/02/02 was not brewed "to style". Instead, we tried to create something new. It’s triple-ish in nature, with wit character, coriander and orange peel, and has way more hops than either a Belgian triple or a Wit would. Belgian yeast was used. Belgian Strong Ale is the closest category that fits -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing CEO. In addition, we are pleased to provide the homebrewing recipe: http://stonebrew.com/timeline/020202
In 2002 we began our groundbreaking, millennium-inspired series with Stone 02.02.02 Vertical Epic Ale. This bumped up Belgian-style wit—made all the more alluring thanks to an infusion of orange peel, coriander, a sprinkling of black pepper and a healthy dose of Centennial hops—was a bright way to begin this epic eleven-part vertical tasting.

FlacoAlto (4182) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - JUL 9, 2017
Sampled July 2017
A steady pour produces a one-finger thick, pale, off-white colored head. The beer is a bright golden color that shows a brilliantly clear, yellow-golden hue when held up to the light. The aroma is bright and spicy with notes of coriander, lemon zest, bergamot, bubblegum, clove, and banana all playing a prominent role, and there is a solid herbal note to the nose as well.

The body has a light viscosity to it that provides some heft and texture, and the carbonation adds a zip to the texture. The finish has a phenolic, sort of spicy, sort of plastic like bite, but there is also ample clove flavors, up front notes of bubblegum, an earthy coriander flavor, a substantial herbal character, lots of citrus character, a touch of banana, as well as a bitter hop finish. Lots of pale malt character accentuates a honey like character here, plus a bit of whole grain cracker with a touch of toasted sweetness. The finish has a peppery note to it that is accentuated by the carbonic character.

Not bad, certainly much better than any aged version of the original that I could have gotten in the last 11 years.

BillWyce (1086) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 2, 2017
Pours clear straw-amber, with a 1-finger white head that left notable lacing on the glass as it dissipated. Aromas of fruit esters, coriander, black pepper, and maybe a yeast note. Body is medium-to-full, maybe a touch of syrup. Dry finish, with a touch of astringency. Flavor of orange peel mixed with an earthy note. Notes of coriander and black pepper as it warms.

Aroma maltado de banana, cravo, especiarias e pimenta-do-reino. Sabor seguindo o aroma com final alcoólico e levemente amargo; retrogosto alcoólico e amargo. Corpo médio e média carbonatação. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours pale clear golden color with a small head. Aroma is apricot and peach, lemon, hops and yeast. Flavor is sweetish peachy, apricot, some grassy tones. Feels quite light for this style, quite flavorful and tasty nonetheless.

Aroma has soapy tones, citrus, spices and Belgian yeast. Flavour has soapy tones, spices, Belgian yeast and bretta with urinal cake. Quite something it promises to be; a Belgian (bretta)beer with spices. Rather light for a 7.5% beer.

Keg, Brewdog Leicester. Hazy golden with a thin lacy foam. Nutty base malts with lots of herbs and spices. Medicinal. Floral and leafy with funky yeast. Banana with spiced oranges and citrus bitterness. Traces of coconut milk. Dry, boozy finish. Peppery, dry, yeasty finish. Good version of the style.

The original 02.02.02 was the only one I missed. I drank the 03 to 12 Vertical I had in 2013.Glad they rebrewed this so I could complete the series. I will wait for the 03 that I loved. Nose is light banana, cloves, and a hint of bubblegum. Very lightly hazy yellow gold with a lightly lacing off white head. Flavor is fruity and spicy with a small amount of bitterness. Wish I had the original in 2002 with a early dated rating.
