A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. Vertical Epic 02/02/02 was not brewed "to style". Instead, we tried to create something new. Its triple-ish in nature, with wit character, coriander and orange peel, and has way more hops than either a Belgian triple or a Wit would. Belgian yeast was used. Belgian Strong Ale is the closest category that fits -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing CEO. In addition, we are pleased to provide the homebrewing recipe: http://stonebrew.com/timeline/020202
In 2002 we began our groundbreaking, millennium-inspired series with Stone 02.02.02 Vertical Epic Ale. This bumped up Belgian-style witmade all the more alluring thanks to an infusion of orange peel, coriander, a sprinkling of black pepper and a healthy dose of Centennial hopswas a bright way to begin this epic eleven-part vertical tasting.

Nice stuff. Floral hops and some straw. Some coriander. Just the kind of Belgian strong I like. Light sweetness with some hint of bitter grass like a cows last meal before the slaughter. Bottle.

650 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a clear golden colour with smallish white head. Aroma is quite spicy with clove and white pepper, quite fruity with lots of apple, some banana and a bit of lemon, as well as some straw and flowers. Flavour is also very fruity and spicy with big apple and white pepper, banana, lemon, orange peel, clove, lots of floral character, some straw and grains. Slight alcohol presence. Quite nice.

Bomber from Cork 57. Ok, let me first say that if I had to rate the tears of all the desperate tickers who cried when this was re-brewed after they spent like $900 to get it on the black market and choked down a crappy 11-year-old witbier while telling every other desperate ticker in their tasting group how amazing it was and that cardboard was actually a delicious flavor that added complexity and depth, that rating would be "11/6/11/6/26 = 6.0 = A+++++ best beer Ive ever had!!!!!" But alas, here I am drinking an imperial witbier thats not 11 years old, but probably just as good as the original was in 2002, and no number of "Nah bro for realz the original was WAY better, best beer I ever had except for Dave that I paid $2000 for" will convince me otherwise. So, the actual beer. It pours clear golden with a lasting white head and nice bubblies. The aroma is quite heavy on the coriander and orange peel, with a touch of pepper, Belgian yeast, and sweat malts. The flavor has a nice sweet base, then gets very herbal, with a touch of citrus and citrusy hops. Medium-plus bodied with nice carbonation. A good beer, but yeah, if you paid the better part of a G for this, then you just might be a desperate ticker.

650 ml bottled 07/22/2016. Big nose of banana bread, toasted walnut and toffee jumps out of the bottle. Pour is amber-golden and mostly clear. Thin film of lasting creamy bubbles on top. Front tastes have big malt notes of caramel and banana bread, slowly turning to toasted walnut. Then some wheat and spicy-peppery citrus and yeast comes in and dries the whole shebang pretty well. Finish has some notes of spicy apple-banana bubblegum and dried grass. Light-medium body has a nice balance, but way too much explosive carbonation.

Bomber into tulip glass, tad hazy golden color with off-white head. Aroma notes of Belgian yeast, bubblegum, clove, coriander, straw, banana, white pepper and citrus zest. Honestly on aroma alone this seems like a strong hefeweizen. Taste adds more hop forward notes of grass, lemon citrus, noble hop spiciness, pepper, citrus, light pine and faintly floral. Medium body, moderate carbonation, almost crisp, dry with Belgian spice/peppery finish. It certainly is Belgian forward with some citrusy hops backing, very good.

650 ml (22oz) bottle bought at ICBeer in Kwun Tong.

Looks: Clear golden colour; Less than one-quarter finger head with residual soapy white foam which fades in 15 seconds; Good sticky lacing with notable slight carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant but slightly pungent malt, with strong wheaty tartness, light perfume, strong floral, strong orange peel, black pepper, coriander, light whipped cream, spice, Bel yeast, lemon peels and grass.

Taste: Medium sweet Ale malt, with fair wheaty tartness, grapefruits, strong citrus peels, floral, molasses, strong resins, spice, light Bel yeast, strong lime, very strong bitter hops and very sharp grass.

Body: Mid to light body; Fairly slick and very oozy palate.

Mouth Feel: Good maltyness in a thinned but slick background. Wheatyness tartness apparent but overwhelmed by massive hop attack in strong grapefruit peels and bitter flesh, floral, strong ooze and spice. Booze is very well hidden, sweetness is medium, well balanced by strong lime. Quite impressive!

Hoppiness: Strong floral, spice, lemon peels and grass in nose. Grapefruits peels, floral, strong resins, spice, strong lime and sharp grass in taste; Bitterness is very strong for a lasting, very high astringent limey bitter finish.

After taste: Quite dry. Citrusy and strong bitter to mouth.

Comments: This is a strong Belgian White with boat loads of Centennial being thrown in. Its aroma is spicy and fairly pleasing, the hoppiness is domineering that any Wits spiciness or fruitiness were suppressed. The strong-for-strong-sake hoppiness does not transcend the Wit to the next level. Very good but not great.

650ml bottle from Cork Keg and Spirits in Rockford, brought by bananabi11. Thanks! 7/22/2016 bottle date, so 4 months old had during trick or treat while answering the door. Pours a clear golden orange. No head. Banana, coriander, light bubble gum. Sweet malts with some lemon and some tangy yeast. Taste has some spicy-ness. There is some alcohol presence. The blend is quite good. Finishes sweet. Quite solid. 14
