A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. Vertical Epic 02/02/02 was not brewed "to style". Instead, we tried to create something new. Its triple-ish in nature, with wit character, coriander and orange peel, and has way more hops than either a Belgian triple or a Wit would. Belgian yeast was used. Belgian Strong Ale is the closest category that fits -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing CEO. In addition, we are pleased to provide the homebrewing recipe: http://stonebrew.com/timeline/020202
In 2002 we began our groundbreaking, millennium-inspired series with Stone 02.02.02 Vertical Epic Ale. This bumped up Belgian-style witmade all the more alluring thanks to an infusion of orange peel, coriander, a sprinkling of black pepper and a healthy dose of Centennial hopswas a bright way to begin this epic eleven-part vertical tasting.

Heres the thing: put enough Centennial hops in your giant witbier and eventually you get a pint that tastes a whole helluva lot like fancy handsoap. All the pleasant wit notes are present--lavender-ish floral sweetness, a mild citric undertone, grassy clove complexity--yet it all gets smashed to pieces by the unreasonably bitter finish. Maybe fresh the hops are bright enough to mesh well with the heavy, honey-like wit soul, but aged the beer takes on a soapy, medicinal finish, much too IBU-laced for such an otherwise nuanced recipe. Looks good, textures strong, smells sweet and saison-ish with spicy citrus underneath, but not very fun to drink.

On tap. Much more meh than other reviews led me to expect. Expensive without the weight to back it up. OK, but hardly stellar. Biting on the tongue, lingering and somewhat unpleasant aftertaste. My first and last of this variant.

Pours bright yellow and dark yellow heart with thick bubbly white head and good carbonation. Settles to a thin head of bubbles leaving good lacing. Aroma is sweeter than most Belgian ales, citrus and banana. Crisp, light, soft mouthfeel with a smooth finish that is well balanced - not dry but not too wet. Citrus and yeast flavour, orange covers the alcohol well with a sharp peppery finish that lingers and balances well with the Belgian style. A perfectly balanced, unique Belgian ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A damn good Belgian style beer from an American brewery. Typically I HATE American attempts at Belgian beers, but this one tasted very authentic. Aroma was yeasty and light. Bubblegum and light fruits in there as well. Pour was a nice hazy light gold with a one finger white head. Taste was very Belgian. Very yeasty with strong bubblegum, apricot and peach. Not too sweet as this style tends to get. Good carbonation. Nice beer

2016 release, from the LCBO. Pours a clean golden colour with a big white head, good retention and foamy lacing. Belgian Ale yeast aromas with lots of banana notes that come out eventually, and hints of apples. Some sharp bitterness in the middle, but not too much dryness. Yet. It does seem to grow. Spices, banana, alcohol, bubblegum and hops. A good Belgian strong ale.

[Bottle (650ml) shared w/ HogTownHarry, GregClow, jercraigs & mabel -- c/o HogTownHarry] Pours a hazy gold with an average size lasting frothy white head. Aroma: Smells like a Golden Ale along with oranges, spices and perfumy notes. Floral flavour along with honey, spices and herbs. Medium bodied. Nothing special, just good.
