A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. Vertical Epic 02/02/02 was not brewed "to style". Instead, we tried to create something new. Its triple-ish in nature, with wit character, coriander and orange peel, and has way more hops than either a Belgian triple or a Wit would. Belgian yeast was used. Belgian Strong Ale is the closest category that fits -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing CEO. In addition, we are pleased to provide the homebrewing recipe: http://stonebrew.com/timeline/020202
In 2002 we began our groundbreaking, millennium-inspired series with Stone 02.02.02 Vertical Epic Ale. This bumped up Belgian-style witmade all the more alluring thanks to an infusion of orange peel, coriander, a sprinkling of black pepper and a healthy dose of Centennial hopswas a bright way to begin this epic eleven-part vertical tasting.

650ml bottle from the LCBO. 7.5% alc./vol. Pours a clear gold colour with two finger of white head which settles into a lasting creamy cap. I get a lot of banana and coriander on the nose with hints of black pepper. There is sweet caramelized malt backbone with notes of banana. The hops become more bitter and dry on the back end. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Recommended.

Rich aromas of bubblegum, banana, clove, earth and wheat. All flavors carry over into the flavor with a slightly bitter, alcohol bite. Medium bodied but heavy on the backside aftertaste. Easy to drink and to like.

Pours golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is Belgian yeast, orange rind, lemon, spices and dish soap. Taste is all of the above with orange rind and lemon dominating followed by passion fruit and a bitter hoppy clovey finish.

Golden blonde, smells like bananas and spiced lightly. Yeasty flavour, very rich and belgian tasting, slight sweetness, extremely good.

Nicely dialed in BSA with strong yeast, pepper and citrus peel in both the nose and aroma. Orange pour, spice hides the abv. Will probably seek out a bottle.

Nice stuff. Floral hops and some straw. Some coriander. Just the kind of Belgian strong I like. Light sweetness with some hint of bitter grass like a cows last meal before the slaughter. Bottle.

650 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a clear golden colour with smallish white head. Aroma is quite spicy with clove and white pepper, quite fruity with lots of apple, some banana and a bit of lemon, as well as some straw and flowers. Flavour is also very fruity and spicy with big apple and white pepper, banana, lemon, orange peel, clove, lots of floral character, some straw and grains. Slight alcohol presence. Quite nice.

Bomber from Cork 57. Ok, let me first say that if I had to rate the tears of all the desperate tickers who cried when this was re-brewed after they spent like $900 to get it on the black market and choked down a crappy 11-year-old witbier while telling every other desperate ticker in their tasting group how amazing it was and that cardboard was actually a delicious flavor that added complexity and depth, that rating would be "11/6/11/6/26 = 6.0 = A+++++ best beer Ive ever had!!!!!" But alas, here I am drinking an imperial witbier thats not 11 years old, but probably just as good as the original was in 2002, and no number of "Nah bro for realz the original was WAY better, best beer I ever had except for Dave that I paid $2000 for" will convince me otherwise. So, the actual beer. It pours clear golden with a lasting white head and nice bubblies. The aroma is quite heavy on the coriander and orange peel, with a touch of pepper, Belgian yeast, and sweat malts. The flavor has a nice sweet base, then gets very herbal, with a touch of citrus and citrusy hops. Medium-plus bodied with nice carbonation. A good beer, but yeah, if you paid the better part of a G for this, then you just might be a desperate ticker.

650 ml bottled 07/22/2016. Big nose of banana bread, toasted walnut and toffee jumps out of the bottle. Pour is amber-golden and mostly clear. Thin film of lasting creamy bubbles on top. Front tastes have big malt notes of caramel and banana bread, slowly turning to toasted walnut. Then some wheat and spicy-peppery citrus and yeast comes in and dries the whole shebang pretty well. Finish has some notes of spicy apple-banana bubblegum and dried grass. Light-medium body has a nice balance, but way too much explosive carbonation.

Bomber into tulip glass, tad hazy golden color with off-white head. Aroma notes of Belgian yeast, bubblegum, clove, coriander, straw, banana, white pepper and citrus zest. Honestly on aroma alone this seems like a strong hefeweizen. Taste adds more hop forward notes of grass, lemon citrus, noble hop spiciness, pepper, citrus, light pine and faintly floral. Medium body, moderate carbonation, almost crisp, dry with Belgian spice/peppery finish. It certainly is Belgian forward with some citrusy hops backing, very good.
