A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. Vertical Epic 02/02/02 was not brewed "to style". Instead, we tried to create something new. Its triple-ish in nature, with wit character, coriander and orange peel, and has way more hops than either a Belgian triple or a Wit would. Belgian yeast was used. Belgian Strong Ale is the closest category that fits -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing CEO. In addition, we are pleased to provide the homebrewing recipe: http://stonebrew.com/timeline/020202
In 2002 we began our groundbreaking, millennium-inspired series with Stone 02.02.02 Vertical Epic Ale. This bumped up Belgian-style witmade all the more alluring thanks to an infusion of orange peel, coriander, a sprinkling of black pepper and a healthy dose of Centennial hopswas a bright way to begin this epic eleven-part vertical tasting.

Bomber. Spicy Belgian yeast aroma with notes of orange, coriander, wheat and black pepper. Pours clear golden colored with a thin white head that has decent retention but little lacing. Starts with wheat malt flavors with mild non-citrus fruitiness and orange citrus. Finishes quite dry with Belgian yeast, pepper, coriander and a slight amount of hops to finish it off. Quite nice.

Bottle-Pours bright deep orange hue with some floaties and a small spritzy white head and sparse lacing. very phenolic nose of corriander. orange peal, lemon zest, almost smells like a big wit beer with some more trippel-ish notes. Flavors are great-lots of orange peal, lemon zest, belgian malt base, carbonation is prickly but yet not too strong. finish if somewhat abrupt with lingering phenols and slight bitterness. Very cool brew and wish i was able to have the original when it was fresh.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 7/22/2016. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy medium golden yellow color with a 2 finger dense and rocky white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big lemon zest, orange peel, pear, apple, coriander, peppercorn, clove, light banana/bubblegum, wheat, biscuit, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, spices, and pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big lemon zest, orange peel, pear, apple, coriander, peppercorn, clove, light banana/bubblegum, wheat, biscuit, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Moderate herbal/citrus peel bitterness and yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon zest, orange peel, pear, apple, coriander, peppercorn, clove, light banana/bubblegum, wheat, biscuit, light honey, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, spices, and pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitter/spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/grainy/sticky, and slightly resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 7.5%. Overall this is a great imperial witbier! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, spices, and pale malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Quite hoppy for the base style, but not enough to make it feel like an IPA. The traditional witbier flavors are the main showcase. A very enjoyable offering.

SDalkoholic (2371) - Linda Vista, California, USA - OCT 10, 2016
Bottle from Sprouts: Poured a golden straw hue with a firm layer of foam head. Aroma smells strong with authentic Belgian ale yeast that brings about scents of clove, coriander seed, sage, banana, and a faint background bubblegum. The drink is bold with the same flavors as mentioned from the aroma except has more taste of herbs such as sage or dried tarragon and comes across as dry on the palate. Taste like a true Belgian ale or a hearty witbier style, but I am just overall happy that this beer had a re-make because it was the only vertical epic I had missed finding back in the day.

On draft, Brew Vino, York, PA served in a snifter glass. Poured clear golden. Minimal white head with scant lacing and retention. Aroma of pepper, banana, clove. Taste is sweet and sour with a nice bitterness that carries this. Medium bodied, light carbonation, slick mouth feel. Finishes dry. Tasting notes of grass, coriander, peppercorns, bubblegum, sour apple and yeast. Nice take on a Belgian strong.

Nice stuff. Floral hops and some straw. Some coriander. Just the kind of Belgian strong I like. Light sweetness with some hint of bitter grass like a cows last meal before the slaughter. Bottle.

Bomber from Whole Foods Milwaukee, 10/12/16. Slightly hazy golden, large foamy off-white head, good retention. Aroma of yeast, bready malt, vinous notes. The taste is bready malt, spice, apple skins, pepper, lime on the tip of the tongue. Medium-full bodied, oily, lingering spice, moderate carbonation.

lesifflebiere (1747) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 23, 2016

glennmastrange (2745) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - JAN 13, 2017
Bottle. Moderate light bread, grain and cereal for the malt, light to moderate perfume for the hops, light dough and dried leaves for the yeast, with notes of apricot, banana and a hint of clove in the background. Head is average sized, frothy, white with nice slippery lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is sparkling clear medium amber. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet, acidic and bitter. Palate is medium, slick with a lively to fizzy carbonation and a lightly alcoholic and astringent finish. Great Belgian Strong Ale with a nice array of aromas. Theres something meaty about it too.
