COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around we used some unmalted wheat, just the right touch of Kaffir Lime Leaf, and a really cool Belgian yeast. The result is a bit like a strong Biere de Garde / Saison-esque influenced beer coupled with some aromatic Bavarian Hefeweizen style phenolic banana esters, and a backnote hint of lime from the lime leaf.

Draft on 12/12/12. Cloudy golden color. Aroma is an odd combination of peppermint and fruit that grows less pleasant as it warms. Taste is similar.

Bottled, thanks hopsrus! Bright golden, creamy head. Strange salty banana aroma. Full bodied and soft, byt assaultingly sweet and with syrupy mouthfeel. Alcohol comes shining through the layers of lemon grassm orange and sugar. Interesting, but not terribly good. Perhaps time will change this?

Cloudy gold - amber beer. Small off white head. Light semi soft palate. Sweet tripel like malts with herbs and spice. Seamless blend of ginger, lemon, floral things and a little sherbet. Finishes semi soft and semi dry. A few oxidisation notes at the start but they burned off quickly. If you have one of these - I would drink now!

UPDATED: MAY 12, 2010 Bottle 65 cl Slightly hazy amber golden with a small, off-white head. Aroma of fruit and aroma hops. Fairly full-bodied with some caramel, lightly perfumy hop accents and a bitter, hoppy finish. Decent but far from outstanding. Courtesy of Storm. 120207

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Blindtasting. Pours an almost clear deep golden with an off-white head. Flowery, hoppy and lightly tart aroma. Medium body, sweetish malt, lightly perfumy some faint notes of horse manure without exactly being sour. Discreet bitterness. 7/4/7/3/15= 3.6 060510

Bottle at RBESG Grand Tasting, August 2005. Gold colour. Is it just me , or does this just have too much going on without a clear underlying theme to draw all the strands together? It has a big citrus rush that I put down to the hops, but perhaps the kaffir lime leaves have a role to play there. Something spicy going on? perhaps that the kaffir lime leaves too? Lots of estery tropical fruit that I didn’t think integrated perfectly and left the whole a bit sweet for my taste. Not a bad beer at all, just not as awesome as I had expected. Unfortunately, too much anticipation can get in the way of appreciation.
