On tap at Brouwer’s Cafe for Big Wood 2013, pours jet black with a creamy brown head. Nose brings out wood, bourbon, a little red wine and some roast. Flavour brings out red wine notes atop roasted malt, Belgian yeast, and a little oxidation notes. Very well-balanced, with a thick, creamy palate. The barrel aging makes it seem like this had oxidized a bit, though I don’t think it has. Moderately enjoyable stuff. brokensail (16609) - Dublin, California, USA - FEB 15, 2011
A: The beer pours a dark brown color with a finger or so of tan/khaki colored head.
S: Not exactly what I was anticipating, but good. Lots of oak with a definite smoke and char note (from the barrel?). The roasted malt note is strong and there’s a bit of vanilla and a decent amount of red wine.
T: The flavor is also very heavy on the roast. There’s more of the dark chocolate and coffee notes that I remember from the original beer. A decent amount of wine but still lots of oak and a moderate charred character.
M: The body is medium and so is the carbonation.

Draught at Chez Moeder Lambic Fontainas during the three day Stone Event, 16-18 september 2011. Pitch black, opaque color, nice vast beige head. Smell coffee, vanilla, caramel and wood. Taste coffee, a lot of roastyness, caramel and bitter: very nice. Good carbonation, full body.

Pouring at session one of Belgian Beer Fest in Boston. Pours a just clear brown with a thin tan head. Roast, toast, char on the nose. The wine barrel is hidden pretty well, slight wood notes, but nothing really vinuous. Chewy roast and char, loads of roast flavors. Black color, big cheeze hole bubble light brown head. Sweet, lactic, wood scent. Sweet, vinous, oak, red wine, chocolate taste. Oak and dry roasted malty aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel, medium high bitterness. Also some coca-cole notes in there.
Draft at Dutch’s. Pours dark brown with medium sized khaki head. The aroma is roasted malts with chocolate, very mild red wine notes, dark fruits and light wood. The flavor is roasted malts and dark chocolate. There is some red wine character, but it us mild. Woody notes with mild earthy bitterness. vs. Moeder: pitch-black with a creamy mocha head, smells like chocolate malt, cocos, sweet dark fruits & chocolate truffles, taste is dark chocolate, thick, slightly roasted malts, slightly bitter but also sweet with cane sugar, caramel, slight liquorice, chocolate syrup, chocolate pie, minor coffee, some wood, not really picking up much vinous on this one, malt & chocolate yummyness
