vs. Moeder: pitch-black with a creamy mocha head, smells like chocolate malt, cocos, sweet dark fruits & chocolate truffles, taste is dark chocolate, thick, slightly roasted malts, slightly bitter but also sweet with cane sugar, caramel, slight liquorice, chocolate syrup, chocolate pie, minor coffee, some wood, not really picking up much vinous on this one, malt & chocolate yummyness

Black color, big cheeze hole bubble light brown head. Sweet, lactic, wood scent. Sweet, vinous, oak, red wine, chocolate taste. Oak and dry roasted malty aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel, medium high bitterness. Also some coca-cole notes in there.

Brune foncée, col crémeux/beige.
Arôme, malt, vin rouge et fût de chêne, le vin donne un aspect de vin cuit allant dans le sens d’un excellent Porto.
En bouche, saveur du vin est intense, fruitée et réchauffant au palais. Garde cet aspect fruité; raisin et vin rouge, un malt grillé avec une pointe de chocolat et en retrait une note de houblons américains. Je reviens sur ce côté de Porto car en effet, le vin rouge est réchauffant, fruité un peu sucré/caramélisé sans pour cela donner une note aigre que l’on retrouve parfois dans certains traitements de vin rouge. Draught Huge, greige head over jet-black beer. Vanilla², chocolate, vanillawood, if that exists. Vanillabeans, chocolate, double (chocolate)cream. Extremely well-bodied, viscous, oily-slick. Tap @ small bar. Wow, what an improvement over the originak. Pours a nice dark brown with thin head. Malty nose with hints of playdough..flavors are awesome though...big malty waves with wine barrell induced playdough funk...chunky and good with a complete disappearance of any crummy vertical spic yeast nonsense that kills the regular releases, the wine barrel hear has really done this beer a marvelous makeover and I could seriously drink this shit endlessly...which I am doing now as I’m on my 4th in a row.

On tap at Stone for Winterstorm 2011. Mellow malty sweet nose. Bit of mid fruit and a bit of wine. Dark brown to black in the glass. Mouthfull is warm fuzzy malt. High red wine sweetness builds. Nice. brokensail (16689) - Dublin, California, USA - FEB 15, 2011
A: The beer pours a dark brown color with a finger or so of tan/khaki colored head.
S: Not exactly what I was anticipating, but good. Lots of oak with a definite smoke and char note (from the barrel?). The roasted malt note is strong and there’s a bit of vanilla and a decent amount of red wine.
T: The flavor is also very heavy on the roast. There’s more of the dark chocolate and coffee notes that I remember from the original beer. A decent amount of wine but still lots of oak and a moderate charred character.
M: The body is medium and so is the carbonation.

Tap at brewery during 2011 Winter Storm. Pours the same pitch black as normal 09 VE but with no head. However, a light swirling regenerates an impressive layer of beige foam. In the aroma, the cooked hot dogs I found in the regular 09 becomes even more prevalent while the burnt malt notes of the regular 09 are more muted here (I assume a year in the wine barrel softens it out). The wine barrel also imparts some light fruit notes to the nose. Flavor still has the dark roasted and burnt malt character up front but somewhat weaker than in the regular. There is still some pleasant coffee and creamy chocolate in the taste. The wine actually seems to lighten the body. Not sure why Stone chose to put what is essentially a Belgian porter into a wine barrel...I feel a brandy barrel might have been more appropriate. I quite liked the regular 09 VE (scored 4.2) and this is still good but I would prefer to drink the regular. (12, 455) HopMasterFlex (108) - Carlsbad, California, USA - FEB 8, 2011
This was the unsung hero at winter storm. It was very dark brown with a reddish hue. Smells of smoke, oak, sweet red fruits, dominated the aroma. The taste was malty with notes of oak, and red wine. Very pleasant flavors and was one of the best I had at the storm. If you are looking for a push to go try it consider yourself shoved!
