3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
The aroma and flavor mirror each other here. Too many flavors clashing with each other....yeast esters, citrus, chocolate, toastiness, oak, clove, molasses...etc. Too much going on, but it’s a young beer. They should wait to release beers like this for at least a year. The finish is watery thin and has a slight alcoholic burn. It’s just too young to be "balanced" or "all together". Some time would obviously do it well, but the body is still very thin (probably thanks to very active Belgian yeast). The ingredients in this beer were obviously framed for the "beer nerd" but it falls short for those of us that actually like to drink beer ready on release. I could only purchase 1 bottle and refuse to wait 1-3 years to drink it. Muddled at the moment.
Bottle at Portland tasting. Soapy light ring, dark balsamic and cola. Light oxidation and red fruit. Bitter, chalky cocoa. Fruity oxidized body. Medium sweet. Light soy, molasses. Fair. nickd717 (4706) - San Francisco, California, USA - MAR 24, 2017
Bottle, finally rating this one this time. Dark brown with a medium khaki head. Aroma is chocolate, orange, anise, oak, herbal notes. Sweet on the flavor, chocolatey with vanilla and citrus, slight Belgian-ish yeast. Medium-plus bodied. Pretty good. bnokk (536) - Lee, Massachusetts, USA - FEB 18, 2017

The bottle was 7 years old but all things considering I think it held up really well.

Nice surprise this is. After sitting on it so long. Pours black with a moderate brown froth. Aroma is soft nuances, vanilla, spice, coffee, chocolate, roasted malts. Taste is velvet mouthfeel, big vanilla and spice hide the roastiness and just smooth everything out. Dry palate, I really like this. Hoprider (699) - DENMARK - MAY 1, 2016
Pours almost black with a semi dense beige head. One finger foam N: Dusty vintage bookstore, light phenols, light licorice. T: mild roast, light to medium sweetness. Belgian yeast again, light licorice, medium roasted malts. Enjoyit (3809) - Vadum, DENMARK - MAY 1, 2016

Had this sometime at the end of 2012, as part of a 03.03.03 - 12.12.12 tasting. I had meant to enter these a while ago while they were fresh and add a few extra details, but that didn’t happen. Review from notes. Anyway, here we go.
3.0 A: Black color. Not much of a head.
4.0 S: Nose on this is quite impressive. Semi-sweet tangerine peel, oak, chocolate. Herbal and earthy hoppiness. Caramel and lots of spiciness.
3.5 T: Like the nose, but not as impressive.
3.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Lightly creamy. Good here.
3.5 D: Good enough. This tastes like palate fatigue.
