4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours an opaque dark brown, accompanied by a thin tan head that dissipates fairly quickly. Aroma is extremely prominent--the smell of alcohol is predominant, mingled with orange and chocolate. There is also some tannin present, a faint aroma of wine and grape. The taste is dense and complex, but opens up as you work through the beer and as it warms up. Alcohol dominates, but chocolate malts are discernible. Fruit and some spice is present and becomes more so. There is a roasted flavor in the aftertaste, but it gradually diminishes. Make no mistake, this is a strong ale, not a stout. But stout and porter lovers will find much to appreciate here. Mouthfeel is kind of average in comparison to the aroma and flavor. Slightly thick, and with a moderate amount of fizzy carbonation. Does’t detract from the experience, but doesn’t add much. In sum, an excellent beer that lives up to the desciption. Orange and chocolate are the leading flavors, and lovers of fine liquor or red wine will find much to like, too.
Backlog, Draft, pours a dark brown, almost black color with a small to medium head. Aroma and flavor of raisin, vanilla bean, chocolate, oak, plum, and banana. Some licorice and other spice as it sits in the glass. Bitter finish on a medium to fuller body. luttonm (6634) - Seattle, Washington, USA - MAY 16, 2017

The bottle was 7 years old but all things considering I think it held up really well. cfrancis (3536) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 6, 2016
Nice surprise this is. After sitting on it so long. Pours black with a moderate brown froth. Aroma is soft nuances, vanilla, spice, coffee, chocolate, roasted malts. Taste is velvet mouthfeel, big vanilla and spice hide the roastiness and just smooth everything out. Dry palate, I really like this. Hoprider (726) - DENMARK - MAY 1, 2016

Had this sometime at the end of 2012, as part of a 03.03.03 - 12.12.12 tasting. I had meant to enter these a while ago while they were fresh and add a few extra details, but that didn’t happen. Review from notes. Anyway, here we go.
3.0 A: Black color. Not much of a head.
4.0 S: Nose on this is quite impressive. Semi-sweet tangerine peel, oak, chocolate. Herbal and earthy hoppiness. Caramel and lots of spiciness.
3.5 T: Like the nose, but not as impressive.
3.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Lightly creamy. Good here.
3.5 D: Good enough. This tastes like palate fatigue.
