COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As with any good epic, herein lies the promise of larger-than-life experiences, heroics, and twists and turns as the adventure unfolds. This bottle-conditioned ale is chapter eleven. Now is the time to enjoy it in a vertical tasting side by side with its ten Stone Vertical Epic Ale brethren! Each one unique to its year of release. Each with its own twist & turn in the plot line. Each one released one year, one month and one day from the previous years edition. This years Stone Vertical Epic Ale is the very last one. Yep, this is it. The final chapter. Or as they say on the last slide in some old films: Fin. No worries though: this edition is particularly well-suited for prolonging the experience, as its as cellarable as any in the series, or more. In this, the final edition, you can expect a perfectly balance *womp* of spices: cinnamon, ginger, allspice, sweet orange peel, clove (only a little!) and rosehips, all in the context of a dark Belgian style abbey-ish beerbut not as sweet. Dry even. Stone style. Thanks for coming on this Epic Stone-style journey with us! You can rest assured there will be new adventures to come

22 oz bomber poured into a snifter at cellar temperature. Black as night pour with thick light brown head. Lacing sticks to the side of the glass like plaster. Huge complex nose of pizza dough, dark chocolate, burnt sugar, Holiday spices and dark fruit with booze in the background. Thick oily mouthfeel. Christmas candy, chocolate, coffee and figs upfront. Taste of brown bread and black liquorice finish this off with a boozy dryness left on the tongue.

Bottle from Julios. Pours out jet black with a thick coffee-cream head that fades to a thin lace. super aromatic herbal and spicy aroma. Big and chewy flavors. Goes down very smooth though. Lots of spice, some sweetness, some smoke, some coffee notes. Nice bitterness to balance. Finish is herbal and smoky.

Pours nearly black with a flourishing tan head of creamy foam. Dwindled slowly to a cap and ring that never faded and left some great lace. Inviting and dark almost bewitching. Nose is a mix of spices and fruit. I smell cloves cinnamon, is that ginger? and nutmeg. As it warms it opens up to some yeast, orange and a fruit smell that I couldnt quite pin down is rose hips. The toasted malt gives it a breaddy cookie like quality. Theres a breath of alcohol and a marvelous hint of chocolate. Its a Xmas cookie in a glass. One of the most complex spice profiles Ive encountered. Taste is lighter than it smells and not as sweet as it smells either. Smooth, burnt around the edges with plenty of bread underneath it all. Not too fruity. A little alcohol to taste is really nice in this. Hops finally come up bitter to take it into the long dry finish. It even has a charred quality thats not disagreeable. Warming and very festive. This is a hard to describe strong dark ale that really surprised me. Far from overly sweet its one I would have again. I wonder how it ages?

2013-02-22. Very dark brown black body, small beige head. 3++ Modest aroma is pleasant, subtle spice, whispers of nutmeg. 7+ Flavour is fairly strongly spiced as well, nutmeg and allspice are both fairly prominent, cloves, sweet malt core, quite bitter in the finish, lingering bitterness and spice. 7++ Smooth medium bodied palate. Pretty nice but I think I enjoy it more in small quantities as the spice is quite assertive. Bottle shared by Blankboy.

Bottle (22 oz). Black with medium tan head and some lacing. Aroma is intensely spicy (cinnamon, ginger, clove), orange peel slight roasted malt and chocolate... not much else. Taste is moderately sweet with cloying spices, chocolate, orange peel, roasted malt and slight bitterness. Medium body. Dry mouthfeel. No balance, low drinkability. Average at best.

Very Christmassy, with nutmeg, cloves and ginger. Quite sprightly and unbalanced. Somehow Stone succeeds in spite if this, but not their best one by a mile. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
