As with any good epic, herein lies the promise of larger-than-life experiences, heroics, and twists and turns as the adventure unfolds. This bottle-conditioned ale is chapter eleven. Now is the time to enjoy it in a vertical tasting side by side with its ten Stone Vertical Epic Ale brethren! Each one unique to its year of release. Each with its own twist & turn in the plot line. Each one released one year, one month and one day from the previous years edition. This years Stone Vertical Epic Ale is the very last one. Yep, this is it. The final chapter. Or as they say on the last slide in some old films: Fin. No worries though: this edition is particularly well-suited for prolonging the experience, as its as cellarable as any in the series, or more. In this, the final edition, you can expect a perfectly balance *womp* of spices: cinnamon, ginger, allspice, sweet orange peel, clove (only a little!) and rosehips, all in the context of a dark Belgian style abbey-ish beerbut not as sweet. Dry even. Stone style. Thanks for coming on this Epic Stone-style journey with us! You can rest assured there will be new adventures to come

Deep, super dark brown coloured body with a very rich, luscious deep brown head, only about a centimetre tall, all with a faint violet and deep brown glow - very nice looking. Aroma of alcohol, spice, cinnamon, canella, nutmeg, cardamom, roasted malt, yeast and coffee - very nice also. Full-bodied; Super rich flavour of roasted malt, alcohol, caramel, earth, prunes, pine, spruce, chocolate, yeast and then a bunch of light spice notes hit the end - very nice indeed. Aftertaste shows a bunch of sugars with chocolate and raisins hitting hard and a good robust yeast and malt profile to finish out the beer - this is nice and well-rounded. Overall, Im usually not a proponent to Stone and their million Imperial IPAs, but this is truly a great beer - rich, assertive, complex and rarely - not a hop-centric beer. Without a label, youd think its another brewing company, but this is well worth finding if you can still get it - a great product! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Half Time in Poughkeepsie, New York on 26-December-2012 for US$8,99 sampled at home in Washington to celebrate running a marathon yesterday in Maryland on 30-November-2014.

One of the best aromas on a beer. Not my favorite tasting with a bit of a funky after taste.

Bottle about two years old now. Thick dark black pour with mocha head, looks like a big imperial stout. Aroma is loaded with spices, clove, nutmeg, chocolate and gingerbread. Taste is spices, followed by bitterness, some gingerbread like flavour and some light sweetness with a bitter dry finish, no hint from the booze, mouthfeel and carbonation are medium. Overall its an interesting beer perhaps a bit muted from the age but very smooth with no harshness from the spices its maybe a bit one dimensional from the spices but overall pretty decent.

ROGUE (2205) - Lewes, Delaware, USA - NOV 13, 2014
12oz bottle. Pours a dark brown, nearly black color with a small creamy khaki colored head that has good retention. Aroma has a big dose of clove and nutmeg, with hints of cinnamon, allspice, gingerbread, floral sweetness, fruitcake, burnt dark sugar and fig. Taste has big flavors of clove, cinnamon, gingerbread cookie, nutmeg, allspice. Tastes like Christmas in a glass. The finish lingers charred malt, candied orange and sweet figs. Medium body with low carbonation that leads to a slightly foamy feel and a smooth finish.

Salmoniform (1272) - Sweet Home, Oregon, USA - NOV 11, 2014
Bottle to Glass. Dark hue with brown head. Aroma is clove, cinnamon, cereal, toast. Mouthfeel is ok with a medium body and crisp carbonation. Taste is sweet with a spice astringent finish. Overall this is an intense brew and is quite over-spiced.

Bottle. Pours black with rich tan head. Aroma of smoke, tons of spices, fennel, anise, allspice, ginger, just a ton of random spices. Taste is way over cloved, whoa clove....medium to full bodied, a lil flat. Overall, way overspiced.

UPDATED: JUL 29, 2015 Bottle @ RG 21. Very dark. Smells spicy and dry/sweet. Lots of metallic in the taste. Fairly light-bodied with some spice. original 3.2. Re-rate 7/15. Had this lurking in the fridge for a few years. Cleaning out, plus no palate fatigue. Still getting some spice maybe allspice or clove. Aged well. Reminds me of Xmas. Nice and complex. Nothing metallic this go round.

Bottle pour @ the 21st Richmond Gathering. Deep brown with a small head. Steak sauce. Cheery meat and chocolate. Coffee. Spices. So strange. taste is similar. Fruit leather. Nasty stale brown bread. Soy sauce. Objectionable. nuff said.

On tap / 22oz bottle - A very nice beer and a bit different from the past years VEs. Lots of clove and allspice in both the aroma and palate. Light-to-medium sweetness left behind to help some of the dark fruit flavors come forward. Reminded me of some kind of blend of a BSA / Anchors OSA and Stones VE (which it is obv). So its a VEOSABSA...great.
