Truth be told, I’ve begun to feel like buying Stone Anniversary or Vertical Epic ales is more of an obligation than something to look forward to. Thus, it was a pleasant surprise to discover that the final VE beer is pretty awesome. I didn’t expect it to pour black from the bottle, and although the nose put me off at first (lots of spice--cinnamon, clove, orange peel, lemongrass, rose notes), the parts come together nicely in the whole, tied together well with a chocolatey non-hop-bomb. Taste comes together like a dark saison, and the palate is quite dry like the style. Solid malt backbone. Lovely.
Poured an oily black with a rich brown creamy head. The head went down fairly quickly and left some light lacing. The aroma was not shy and full of various aromas. It was full of cinnamon, molasses, nutmeg and chocolate. There was a bit of a sweetness in the aroma as well. The beer had a silky smooth texture and full of great flavors. There was a hint of a slight smoke in the beer and a hint of nuttiness. There was a light sweetness to the beer, but also a hint of dark chocolate bitterness. There was also some nutmeg and molasses in the flavor as well. This beer is very complex and the longer you drank it more flavors came out and on the finish the palate was just discovering new flavors. Excellent beer!. Glad I was able to let it age 4 yrs. kermis (13297) - The Hague / Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - DEC 20, 2016
Bottle shared with and courtesy of an on-heat platypus on an Artic Den Haag winter’s eve. Black with a beige head. Aroma of spice, cardamom, bay leaves, curry powder, caramel and cinnamon. Flavour is above moderate sweet and moderate bitter. Medium to light full bodied with soft carbonation. Svartvit (574) - NETHERLANDS - DEC 20, 2016

Tap, Pours a black color with coffee head and nice lacing. Aroma is heavy on Winter spices: Sage, Christmas tree, cinnamon, plum wine and caramel malt. Flavor is just as spiced with some douglas fir, rosemary, nutmeg, and sweet malts. Couldn’t finish a whole pour of this one. jinroh (1578) - ESTONIA - SEP 28, 2016
Dark brown, almost black with some beige bubbles on top. Aroma has some christmas spices, gingerbread and cinnamon. Tastes also very Christmasy - or should I say that even feels a bit like a pumpkin beer, although its not. Insane amount of spices in a strong dark ale. TimE (5809) - Tokyo, JAPAN - SEP 27, 2016
Medium dark brown color. Someone dumped the spice rack into this with tons of nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla. drpimento (3632) - La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA - SEP 25, 2016
Aroma is mainly spice with a little Licorice and molasses hint of malt. Flavor is similar to nose but with toasted malts coming out to balance the heavy spices but it’s not very effective. It’s okay but it’s one of my least favorites Stone beers. olsvammel (7220) - Örebro, SWEDEN - JUL 29, 2016
Bottle from Systembolaget. Very spicy with cinnamon and some other spices I relate to christmas. Some dark malts. Similar taste, very strong. Christmasy. Too much spices.
