Pours black with redish brown edges. Large head. Aroma is dark, bitter chocolate with a hint of vanilla. Taste is roasted malt and dark, dry, bitter chocolate.
A little bit too dry and bitter I think.

Meh. Not up to Stone’s usual standards, in my opinion. Starts off looking rich and decadent, but the body, medium-full at best, drops off to watery fairly quickly, making this another oatmeal stout supporting my theory that oatmeal makes for a thinnish Imperial Stout. And yes, the label is correct in calling it bitter, but that’s only part of the story: there’s a significant nearly-acidic astringency, especially in the finish, that lingers and builds. On the other hand, the high ABV is well-integrated to the point that it’s pretty much completely absent. Good, but hardly memorable. (14/20) Alusmamuts (2139) - LATVIA - JAN 24, 2017
Another gift for degustation from other Delirium visitor. Almost black with small brown head. Sweet bit roasted aroma with coffee notes. Roasted grain bitterness with vanilla sweetness, coffee notes and some whisky barrel notes on the background.

Bottled on 01/15/16. Pours black with a dark brown head. A lot of chocolates & bready malts in the aroma followed by hints of coffee & brown sugar. Palate is of course hit with bitter, raw, acidic chocolates up front; roasted malts provide some coffee notes in the middle before finishing off with some sweet bread notes. There’s even some light banana-like sweetness going on. It’s full-bodied and a bit chewy; low carbonation; aftertastes is harsh from the bitter chocolate. Overall, it’s a powerful display of dark chocolates. Oatmeal adds some creamy, sweet contrast but it’s still very dry & sort of simplistic. CyborgX (127) - THAILAND - JAN 18, 2017
Bottle - no distinct aroma, pours a coal mine jet. Lack witha dark brown head. Taste is initially smooth chocolate but falls away to a bitterness of hops and bitter cocoa beans. There are faint traces of other ingredients, but all fall away to the donminance of cocoa. Drinkable, but the concentration on bitterness to the point of using bitter cocoa instead of the usual hops to get the same result, speaks of an unhealthy fixation on bitterness...

Bottle. Pitch black beer, average beige head, decent retention and lacing. Aroma of chocolate (milk, bitter), cocoa, dark fruits, some smoke. Taste is light to medium sweet and more than medium bitter, cocoa, chocolate, light notes of dark fruits, some roasted malts. Intense bitter chocolate in the finish. As Stone Twelfth Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout, bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck. Medium thick, creamy, deep brownish beige, coffee cream-like head, gradually thinning in the middle but generally well-retaining; opaque jet black robe. Enticing, rich bouquet of ’fondant’ chocolate bars, mocha ice cream, pastry, hazelnut oil, toasted brown bread, caramel sauce, coffee grounds, toasted peanuts, candied fig, ripe elderberries, whisky, more subtle hints of sweet pipe tobacco, haemoglobin iron, black radish, cinnamon, old ginger root, liquorish, grapefruit juice, Bailey’s, green beans, charred wood, varnish or fresh paint (stronger as it warms up), nutmeg, beef stock. Rounded, soft onset nicely mixing restrained candied fig or date sweetness with equally restrained dried berry sourishness and a thin rim of cured meat-like umami, softly carbonated, creamy, oily and ’moelleux’ (likely the effect of the oats), immediately filling the mouth. Rich, thickly layered dark maltiness makes up the middle, toffeeish and nutty with the promised bitter chocolate flavor coming to full grandeur just before the finish and evolving further into a pungent, peppery bitter tail of strong roasted bitterness (black coffee, burnt toast, charred meat even) and a spicy, lingering, well-positioned hop bitterness, before a warming glow of whisky-like alcohol sets in ties it all together, even showing a certain wryness at the root of the tongue, yet quickly receding again and thus not disturbing the overall profile of indeed very bitter, black chocolate. This beer was apparently first made for Stone’s 12th anniversary and repeated for their 20th anniversary; it bears unmistakable similarities with their famed imperial stout, but in perhaps a slightly lighter and more sweetish, clearly more explicitly chocolatey way, the ’rotundity’ of which is accentuated by the velvety effect established by the oatmeal. Rich, decadent and opulent stout, but not over the top like some other American stouts these days, this is a truly delicious beer worthy of celebrating any anniversary of a brewery with such a record of achievements and influence in the American craft beer revolution. tia (2228) - Sandston, Virginia, USA - JAN 1, 2017
