COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Who knew a worldwide hop shortage in 2008 would give rise to such a memorable, delicious beer? When it came time to craft a commemorative offering for our 12th anniversary, we decided to trade in the bitterness of hops for the bitterness of unsweetened chocolate, and paired that with flaked oats. Featuring a thick, rich, roasty mouthfeel and chocolate-heavy flavors and aromas, this onyx-colored, malt-forward beauty became an instant classic that shares space on our liquid trophy case alongside our hop-focused fan favorites. Rebrewed for our 20th Anniversary Encore Series.

Hops: Summit, Willamette, Galena & Ahtanum

This is from a while ago... Pours nearly opaque with a bright, light tan head. The aroma is filled with chocolate and caramel. On the palate, the chocolate and toffee also show the characteristic slickness of an oatmeal stout. The abv is extremely well hidden. Great stuff!

Pitch black color, medium sized brown head. Aromas of chocolate, oats, roasted malt, cacao and chocolate milk. Taste of chocolate, roasted malt, slight hop and a light bitter and alcoholic finish. Good, but a bit boring.

Really good. Beautifully dark with a good tan head. Chocolate and roasted malt aroma. Same with the flavor with a bitterness and complexity. Weighty and smooth.

Bottled:
Pours black with redish brown edges. Large head. Aroma is dark, bitter chocolate with a hint of vanilla. Taste is roasted malt and dark, dry, bitter chocolate.
A little bit too dry and bitter I think.

Appearance: opaque black with one fat finger of fluffy beige head, good retention and moderate lacing. (4/5) Aroma: mild, cocoa nibs, roasty malt, dark fruit. (7/10) Taste: moderate-high sweet, moderate-high bitter. (7/10) Palate: medium-full body tending slightly watery, moderate carbonation, off-dry mildly astringent finish. (3/5) Meh. Not up to Stones usual standards, in my opinion. Starts off looking rich and decadent, but the body, medium-full at best, drops off to watery fairly quickly, making this another oatmeal stout supporting my theory that oatmeal makes for a thinnish Imperial Stout. And yes, the label is correct in calling it bitter, but thats only part of the story: theres a significant nearly-acidic astringency, especially in the finish, that lingers and builds. On the other hand, the high ABV is well-integrated to the point that its pretty much completely absent. Good, but hardly memorable. (14/20)

Another gift for degustation from other Delirium visitor. Almost black with small brown head. Sweet bit roasted aroma with coffee notes. Roasted grain bitterness with vanilla sweetness, coffee notes and some whisky barrel notes on the background.

Bottled on 01/15/16. Pours black with a dark brown head. A lot of chocolates & bready malts in the aroma followed by hints of coffee & brown sugar. Palate is of course hit with bitter, raw, acidic chocolates up front; roasted malts provide some coffee notes in the middle before finishing off with some sweet bread notes. Theres even some light banana-like sweetness going on. Its full-bodied and a bit chewy; low carbonation; aftertastes is harsh from the bitter chocolate. Overall, its a powerful display of dark chocolates. Oatmeal adds some creamy, sweet contrast but its still very dry & sort of simplistic.

CyborgX (90) - THAILAND - JAN 18, 2017
Bottle - no distinct aroma, pours a coal mine jet. Lack witha dark brown head. Taste is initially smooth chocolate but falls away to a bitterness of hops and bitter cocoa beans. There are faint traces of other ingredients, but all fall away to the donminance of cocoa. Drinkable, but the concentration on bitterness to the point of using bitter cocoa instead of the usual hops to get the same result, speaks of an unhealthy fixation on bitterness... ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

DonGregorio (155) - POLAND - JAN 15, 2017
Bottle. Pitch black beer, average beige head, decent retention and lacing. Aroma of chocolate (milk, bitter), cocoa, dark fruits, some smoke. Taste is light to medium sweet and more than medium bitter, cocoa, chocolate, light notes of dark fruits, some roasted malts. Intense bitter chocolate in the finish. Medium to full body, soft carbonation. Velvety, oily oatmeal feel. Not the most complex and intense, but very tasty stout.
