Who knew a worldwide hop shortage in 2008 would give rise to such a memorable, delicious beer? When it came time to craft a commemorative offering for our 12th anniversary, we decided to trade in the bitterness of hops for the bitterness of unsweetened chocolate, and paired that with flaked oats. Featuring a thick, rich, roasty mouthfeel and chocolate-heavy flavors and aromas, this onyx-colored, malt-forward beauty became an instant classic that shares space on our liquid trophy case alongside our hop-focused fan favorites. Rebrewed for our 20th Anniversary Encore Series.

Bottled. Tucked away in the closet for the past 5 years, got some age on it. Pours silky black with minimal carbonation. Aroma of anise, dark fruit and chocolate. There is a slight character of wet cardboard/band-aid that I take as slight oxidation. Flavor is tasty sweet and smoky up front with tones of coffee and chocolates underneath. Fades rather quickly and overall seems a bit thin. Could be the age. More strange funk notes on the end of the flavor profile. Medium mouthfeel. Pretty good; I really wish I would have rated it fresh.

October 2016 - Bottle share at One Canada Square. Thanks Cloin! As Stone Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout, 9.2%. Black, opaque with a foamy dark brown head, leaving dotted lacing. Aroma is booze, dark chocolate, red berry and bourbon biscuit. Body is quite smooth with soft carbonation. Taste is dark chocolate, drying dusty booziness, spicy and bitter into the finish. I like the bitter dark chocolate vibes but its quite harsh and boozy given the moderate ABV for style. (3.7)

Encore series Bottle. Pours inky black, medium brown head, creamy with great lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, molasses, anise, a bit of oak, coffee, tobacco, leather. Flavor is light plus sweet, medium plus bitter. Full body, creamy, lingering bitterness. Good and all, but time has taken its toll on this recipe.

Bottle shared at the level 42. Canary wharf tasting 20/10/2016. Many thanks to Colin for this one. A jet black brown coloured pour with a a dark tan head. Aroma is dark chocolate malts, nutty, jammy fruits, nutty, hazelnut. Flavour is composed of earthy, big dark choc, nutty, hazelnut, coco nibs, blackberry fruits. Lingering ashy roast. Palate is semi sweet. Creamy, rounded, moderate carbonation. Lingering dark choc. Good stuff.

Being a stout fan I am in awe of this one. The unique idea to use bitter cocoa instead of hops create a stout that is big and bold on toast with oatmeal to smooth out all the rough edges. Not too sweet nor too dry. Doesnt rise to the level of IRS but a damn good Stone stout.

22oz bottle shared in CW. Thanks to Colin. It pours a dark brown color with a small beige head. Aroma is roasty and lightly bitter with notes of bitter chicolate and wood. Taste is also roasty and astringent with notes of cocoa and coffee. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, tasty number

Bottle shared in London - thanks to Cloon. Pours deep brown with a creamy beige head. Good roast in those, milk chocolate, ash. Medium sweet flavour with jammy dark fruits, berries, cocoa, roast. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Nice balance in the finish, more luscious chocolate, moderate roast, raisins. Good stuff.

UPDATED: OCT 21, 2016 Bottle thanks to Colin. It pours black with a thick tan head. The taste is rich roasted malt, bitter - sweet, blueberry muffin, juicy, candy, Eccles cake and tangy fruits. The taste is smooth, bitter - sweet, toasty, earthy roast, cacao nibs, wood, blackcurrant, fruit cake, muffin, wood, earthy and some spice with a dry, earthy finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Decent.

Bottle split at Level 42, picked up in the US, 20/10/16. Black with a well appointed tan cap. Nose is charr, chocolate biscuit, spice, toffee, light dark fruit rinse. Taste comprises chocolate, spice, charr, toffee, brown bread, milk chocolate. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Easy drinking impy but no Ww.

Bottle. Pours jet black with a creamy, mashed-potato, lacy, tan head. Nose is smoke, licorice, baking chocolate, vanilla, coffee, and marshmallow (?!?). Very, very rich and bitter on the tongue; an immense dark chocolate punch wreathed with a custardy texture, as well as notes of dried plum, date, coffee, and vanilla. Intense without being overwhelming. Finish is superlative, as is the mouthfeel. A classic.
