"This beat the Highland Edition (quite good on it’s own a couple weeks ago) in a straight head to head. The scotch effect is a little more earthy and peaty, and the feel was fantastic - obvious lower heat in this version, with all the black sticky, hoppy, scotch goodness. Awesome brew!!" 500 ml bottle poured into a Spiegelau tulip. Black with two fingers of frothy tan head. Aromas of scotch whisky, dark fruit, oak, some chocolate. Tastes of whisky, chocolate, dark fruit and raisins, light floral hops. Medium-light body with a dry finish. Low carbonation, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Black with a good sized tan covering.
Nose is roast malt, pine, blackcurrant, light ash, tarte dark berry fruits, light smoke, coconut rub, subtle whisky presence.
Taste comprises dark malts, bitter grapefruit, cocoa powder, spice, light booze, burnt notes, subtle BA whisky.
Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a lick of warming alcohol.
Solid BA CDA, all kept in check well.

Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Thanks to Leighton. Opaque dark brown - black beer. Tidy pale tan head. Palate is airy and light with fine carbonation. Smooth dark malt, little tangy. Mild spice and bourbon soaked dark fruits. Airy.semi dry finish. Nice beer but DPA character is a bit lost.
Bottle shared in London - picked up at a convenience store in Solana Beach. Pours deep brown with a frothy, tan head. The nose has a lot of torched brown sugar, some cocoa, burnt toffee, burnt honey. Medium to big sweet flavor with lots of burnt honey, burnt toast, earth, some grainy chocolate. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Warming finish, with lots of toasty toffee, more burnt honey, torched wood, earth, dark chocolate. Delicious. Great depth. More impressed with this than I thought I would be. Excellent. UPDATED: MAY 13, 2014 Bottle thanks to Leighton. It pours near black with a small tan head. The nose is fresh, vanilla, toffee, candied peel, sherbet, fruit cake, vanilla, coconut, toasty and coconut milk. The taste is rich, sharp, roasted malt, toast, alcohol hit, boozy fruits, roasted malt, rocky road, toffee and dirt with a dry finish. Full body and fine carbonation. Pretty ballsy stuff. 500 ml corked and caged bottle purchased at the brewery 1.5 years ago ($18.00). Pours almost completely black with the lightest brown around the edges. Like the Highland version of this, the cork opened without a pop which resulted in only a half finger of dark tan foam. AROMA of big earthy and lightly peaty Scotch, roasty malts, dark caramel, marshmallows, booze, and cocoa powder. FLAVOR of very dark and high cacao content artisan chocolate, big Scotch notes (but not especially boozy), vanilla bean, molasses, sweet coffee, Finishes lightly sweet and lightly boozy, but with no bitterness. Like the Highland version, this has taken on a character very different from the original 15th Anniversary beer. As such, it should probably be classified as an American Strong Ale since there is really no hop presence left to continue calling it a Black IPA. Bottle sampled @ Dak’s Black Friday tasting. Dark mahogany pour with onyx at its core and a fluffy latte head. Candied citrus, dark malt, peat, whiskey, wood, evergreen, and alcohol. Bottle:   Black, thin foamy beige head, nice lacing.   Sweet strong whiskey tainted roasted malt nose.   Smooth on the tongue, roasty, sweet, very soft whiskey.   A bit chewy, clean, hides the 11.5% well.   As it warms the Whiskey becomes more noticeable.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   Moderately bitter finish, roasty, with a fairly assertive Scotch presence.   Not terribly bright as others, but smooth and well balanced, plus with a bit of a Whiskey tinge.   Good stuff!
