Weve been loving creating Collaboration beers with great creative brewers from all over the world these last several years-unique beers that would never have existed without the free-flowing imagination and idea generation of the collaborative process. However, when it comes to the Stone Anniversary Ales, its all us. Yet, it is indeed still a collaboration with great creative brewers (if we do say so ourselves). Were talking about our own brewing team, of course. And while some of our beers, anniversary and otherwise, have been designed by a single person, the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA was definitely a team effort.

This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, its a Double IPA (can you really say youre surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the lets-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, weve brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isnt quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

So I was worried about this one with all the lemon but I love Stone, I wanted to give it a try. So I agree with one reviewer that: " Taste is sweet caramel, toffee, nice lemon and oily notes, hints of a slight herbal and grass mixing into some dank notes, finishing fairly sweet, but balanced with a fairly bitter kick."

This beer was utterly awful. Drain pour to the extreme. Thanks to yourefragile for sharing. Served in a goblet. Pours inoffensively enough, but then it quickly fills the air with the disgusting scent of lemon household cleaner and...nothing else. I was hesitant to take a sip, thinking it couldnt be safe. For my taste buds, it wasnt. More lemon. At least some bitterness here, but that didnt help anything. Memo to Stone: sometimes its okay not to go extreme.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Wilburs Foco. Pours a fairly clear, rust orange appearance with a light tan head that has pretty good lacing. Dank, grapefruity, fairly spicy, cinnamon-like, herbal hoppy, slightly sprucey, caramel aroma. Very spicy (nutmeg/cinnamon), tangy orange/pineapple/grapefruity, somewhat piney/herbal hoppy, toasty malty, light toffee flavor. Alcohol is masked quite well. Really a strange spiciness going on and seems a bit all over the place. Drinkable but not nearly as good as some of Stones other IPA releases.

another year of stone to enjoy. A bomber to myself. a clear light amber with little head film on the top. Aroma is a unique mix of lemon oil, pepper and a savory spiciness from the rye. Taste has that rye malt at first but some tropical passion fruit comes through and ends with a light bitter film on the tongue. Never had an IPA like this and in no way get a sense of this being a 10abv beer except maybe some booze notes if i smell it very deeply.

Bottle... Poured a nice amber/orange with an eggy, mildly off-white head. Nose had hop resins and citrus. The citrus really came through here. Bitter rind-like tones and definitely some acidity lemon citrus and oil. Quite nice with a big hop bitterness but also balanced enough to mask the high abv. Quite nice.

Tap. Light eggshell head, mostly clear dark amber orange. Lots of lemon that dominates the aroma, lemon oils like the kind found in scented candles, and I do get some lemony hops. Lemon dominate, tea, spIces, drying citric hops in the end. Maybe just too much on the lemon for me bit intersiting. Medium oily body.

UPDATED: AUG 21, 2012 Bouteille 22 oz. I usually wright my ratings in French but because this is soooo good, for my non-French friends, this beer is amazing. You love IPAs.....extreme IPAs...citrus, malt. Seriously this is a great beer. Fresh ? better. Thanks Stone.

Aromatics when in a solid sniffer impart many different scents than a standard imperial glass (silly me for starting in the imperial!). Loads of lemon peel and alcohol both of these elements almost overpowers the hop base. Appearance is amber/goldenrod in color and a white head that pours about a finger and lingers in a wispy layer. Taste is first hit with hop bitterness, middle is bitterness and then you get a solid grapefruit sweetness on the back finishing end. Palate is medium-thick and very pleasant. Overall, this is a very tasty, palatable beer with a super nice aroma!

Smells like Pinesol and lemons. Taste is pretty much the same with the lemon flavor coming out more as the beer warms...not liking this at all.
