We celebrated our first five years in business by releasing anniversary India pale ales, with each subsequent IPA brewed to be hoppier and more intense than the previous. For our 6th anniversary in 2002, we extended this concept by making an intensified version of Stone Smoked Porter. We cranked up the malts and hops a notch or three and conditioned it on French and American oak, which accentuated our porter’s distinctive smokiness and amplified its chocolate and roast coffee flavors while also adding subtle notes of toffee, cherries, dried berries and vanilla. We’re proud to give those who missed out—as well as those who didn’t—a fresh shot at experiencing this smoky, dark-as-night wonder.

I like the beer. But I agree, perhaps a bit too hoppy. For perfection, anyway. It's well matched by a huge roasted maltiness, and by the end of the bottle, with the concomittent softening of brain cells, I have very warm feelings for the drink. No grim reaper, but maybe a ride with ET on his bicycle through the fields of hop flowers, before landing in a burnt grain silo. Worth cracking open.

5/24/2016 -- from notes: Pint on tap at Dutch's. Clear dark brown color. Thin off-white head head, leaving great frothy lace. Small bit of earthy hop, nice roastiness, mild to moderate smoke, some dark chocolate. Moderate to bigger bitter taste, moderate sweet, good dryness. Medium to bigger body, good chewiness. Kind of crisp carbonation. Pretty great. Awesome with my reuben.

Bottle from Systembolaget, Sweden. Big and lasting brown fluffy head. Very dark red brown color. Huge dark roasted malt aroma. Equally big dark roasted malty taste with a firm bitterness and small sweetness with a big body. Good for a New Years warmer.

UPDATED: DEC 24, 2017 Bomber. Very nice aroma, roasty, a little smoky, sweet. Dark brown color with really nice ruby highlights, beige head that thins but lingers. Little lacing. Not a fan of smoke beers, & this is about as much as I like. Not bad though. Med to full bodied. Smooth. Not my favorite Porter, but not bad!

Oily black body, some tan lacing. Aroma is smoky and malty, some brown sugar. Taste has light bitterness, roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate. Medium body, smooth mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Very nice.

UPDATED: DEC 5, 2017 Butelka 650 ml. Godne.

Pite u Marcina D w HQ
Smaczne, czekoladowo - deserowe. Kawa gdzieś w tle. Alkohol ukryty. Smak głęboki i dojmujący. Goryczka bardzo wysoka, zalegająca, niestety. Całość potwornie wytrawna. Chyba najbardziej wytrawny z porterów jaki piłem do tej pory. Goryczka niestety w połowie butelki zaczyna przeszkadzać i męczyć.

An unbalanced, not so complex but not easy drinking at all either Imperial Porter that doesn't belong - at least not this version - in the top-50 of it's category. Flavors of ashes, smoke, licorice and bitter chocolate mostly with some fruity and vanilla notes.

2002 original bomber shared on 7/29/17.
Still shows carbonation and even a thin, dark brown head (low retention at this point, of course). Dark ebony body of high clarity, leaving the sediment behind.
Inevitable oxidation, of course, but still a clear, clean, enjoyable smoke presence with coffee-like roast and still a healthy caramel malt backing. As it warms and breathes, the oxidation never dominates but yet allows more vanilla, almost peat-like smoke and gentle roast to really shine. No alcohol or flaw.
Soft, well-attenuated, but not terribly thinned-out body, still drinks just fine. Carbonation is of course low, but not loose or watery. Smoke is dynamite and has bits of peat-like medicinals. Caramel and vanilla add just a pinch of sweetness, even now, and the oxidation doesn't ruin the beer or dominate. Still has a fresh "house" character of mineral and fruit and the roasted acidity has helped preserve this. Obviously a bit of nostalgia creeping in to my rating here, I won't deny. And while it's obviously far past its prime, I really don't think I'm exaggerating when I say this beer was still drinkable and enjoyable. Obviously you have to extrapolate a little past the oxidation, but there's zero doubt in my mind that this was one of the best beers ever brewed for its time. Ah, the good days of Stone....
