Slightly sweet malt aroma. Big malt flavor throughout balanced by the 'signature' big hop flavor Stone is known for. I like it...glad I have more to stash away. jsquire (4514) - St. Marys, Ohio, USA - OCT 23, 2003
Deep amber in my Lager glass with a frothy, cream colored head that left good lacing. The nose reminds me of pineapple upside-down cake. Strong malt back bone but the flavor is all hop. Grapefruit, pineapple, orange rind and apple sauce. Very smooth mouthfeel even if it is a little syrupy. Sometimes you just have to ignore the verbiage on the bottle and just drink the beer. Greg, shut up and make more beer. pivo (2685) - GERMANY - NOV 25, 2003
Very hoppy nose with a hint of cracker-like malt, crystal clear amber color, sticky and fluffy head. Sweet toasted malt body with tastes dark breads. American west coast hops scratch the sides of the mouth as it goes down. Alcohol galore well after the swallow. Very complex and well balances for its aggressiveness. Hops are chilled by the heavy and thick maltiness. Over the top for an ale! argo0 (14127) - Washington DC, USA - JAN 5, 2004
Lightly hazed body with small off-white head. Aroma is sweet, very hoppy (floral & citric). Taste is medium sweet, quite hoppy (floral/grapefruit/herbal), but toffee/caramel maltiness balances it nicely. Full body, some resin. Seems IPA more than APA, but perhaps I quibble -- the bottom line is another delicious beer. BigBastard (668) - L.A., California, USA - FEB 13, 2004
This was hard to discern from the Arrogant Bastard, with some IPA thrown in. Top notch all the way though. Very hoppy with some sweet malt and citrus in there too.

UPDATED: SEP 26, 2006 Hazy reddish orange. Thin and sparse white head with good sticky lacing. Nice moderately sweet hoppy aroma... hops seem slightly leathery. Sweetness in the aroma is in the form of fresh citrus fruit... oranges, grapefruit. A nice mix of excellently balanced flavors. Not too powerful, but just enough flavor. Malt and grapefruit hops with zested grapefruit and orange rind. Delicate mouthfeel. I don’t know... I don’t follow the Arrogant/Double Bastard bandwagon. Give me more 7th! Reminds me quite a bit of the Stone 4th, just a little bit fresher.
Update, 9/26/2006 - Shared my last bottle. Still quite nice, but not as good as I remember. Hops may have died down a bit more and turned into very slight astringent hints. Still, glad I kept this one around and glad I could share it! RooftopRogue (423) - Champaign, Illinois, USA - DEC 31, 2005
This beer produces an aroma of hops, yeast, and honey. It enters the mouth with rich taste of yeast and sweet corn. It a moderately heavy beer that fades leaving a mild sweet nutty taste lingering. Numenor (871) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - MAY 27, 2006
UPDATED: MAY 28, 2006 Rating #400 -- Sampled at the "2nd Richmond Gathering". Awesome aroma for a three year old American Strong Ale, almost barley wine like. Heavy caramel, some almost oak-like qualities, a muskiness to it. Beautiful golden-ruby body with no head. Great taste, mollasses, hops are still surprisingly present after three years. Some light oxidation is showing up, yet that is to be expected. Nice ending.detroiter (958) - Euphoria, Minnesota, USA - FEB 3, 2007
I have to give a huge thanks to CaptainCougar for sending me this beer. He’s a great trader and I’m very lucky to be able to have this.
Pours a very hazy orange-amber with an inch or so of light tan head. Decent rings of foam left behind as the volume of beer in the glass decreases. Caramel malt and hops in the aroma.
First sip - much sweeter than I expected, tons of caramel malt. Nicely balanced with strong grapefruity hops. The finish is alcohol and slightly spicy hops. Full-bodied, very softly carbonated. Deeply bitter aftertaste (not citrusy at all). Now there’s malt in the aftertaste too. mds (2250) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 12, 2007
Bottle. Pours a murky, bright orange body with a white bubbly/soapy head. Heavy resinous aroma with bread and residual sweetness. There are also hints at toffee and butterscotch.
Interestingly enough there is still a lot of hop character in the flavour with persistent caramel and toffee notes. The alcohol content is well masked by the seemingly chewy palate. Finishes with some toast and orangey hops but not at all overwhelming throughout the journey.
Thanks for the opportunity, radiomgb. Sampled on April 21, 2007.
