COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch speaking Belgians say “Belgie”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA.

The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone Brew – and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Lovely golden colour, virtually no head, low carbonation. Nose has some boozy vodka grain, banana and grassy hops. Taste is of banana, grassy hops similar to a German lager, light spice. Unfortunately a bit of a metallic taste to begin with and a thin palate. Worth a go. Price Paid: £2.19 - 330ml can.

F: medium size, white, not long lasting. C: gold, light hazy. A: light tropical fruits, tangerine, unusual banana, bit pear. T: malty backbone, tangerine, herbal, orange, bit grapefruit, biscuit, bit caramel, medium body and carbonation, not the best one but interesting, worth to try, enjoyed, 33cl can from Bierwinkel De Hopduvel in Gent.

Canned 330ml. -Berlin version. Clear pale golden coloured, small white head, mild yeasty nose. Sweetish malty, yeasty, mild fruity hoppy and pleasant notes of coriander with touch of alcohol and spices in the finish. Not so intensive bitterness.

Aroma: Strong features; mango and grapefruit. Appearance: Gold color with cloudy liquid and white head. Taste: Heavy bitterness with heavy wour notes. Palate: Medium body with oily texture and soft carbonation. Long bitter and sour finish, with strong grapefruit touch. Overall: Strong features. Refreshing and it leaves a long memory without astringent notes.

Can from Beer52. Gold with a white head and a pleasant frothy fizz. Smells of Belgian banana yeast and lemon. The banana yeast is to the fore in the flavour as well, with orange, grass, mint and spice too. It’s very dry and mildly bitter. I just don’t like that banana in an IPA; although I appreciate it’s well executed it’s really not my sort of beer and my least favourite of the 6 Stone beers that Beer52 sent me.

(330 ml can) Pours a slightly hazy straw-golden beer, with fine carbonation, and a large dense white head. The Belgian yeast aromas come through straight away: banana, cloves, and sourdough bread. This is backed by a strong base of fresh malt. The classic west coast aromas come through just behind: lemon, caster sugar and grapefruit. The flavour is medium-sweet, but has a distinctive dry-tart finish, enhanced by the light, slick mouthfeel of the beer. This is an interesting Belgian-Californian crossover. The Belgian yeast clearly adds a new dimension to what would otherwise be a fairly ordinary APA. Overall, it’s a happy marriage - characterful and refreshing.
