COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch speaking Belgians say “Belgie”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA.

The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone Brew – and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Pours clear gold with a frothy white head. Aroma is grapefruit, citrus, with distinct notes of yeast and spice. An enticing prelude. The taste is bittersweet up front with a candy bubblegum flavor defining the sweeter side. This is swept away going into the finish, which is defined solely by a hoppy bitterness that can feel astringent at times. As with the normal IPA from Stone, I am a fan of the palate which is creamy, sticky, smooth and yet not overly heavy. Apart from the finish, which is merely mediocre, a very nice brew.

Draught @ Fox & Hounds, Sønderborg. Pours nearly clear straw with airy but stable white head. Clear aroma of hops and citrus, with some fruity and floral notes and hints of yeast. Intense, bitter and citric flavour of American hops, with notes of fruit and Belgian yeast and touches of malt. Lingering, dry aftertaste. An okay Calibelgian experiment but I prefer the regular IPA from Stone.

Copenhagen 19/2 2017. 33 cl can from Meny. Happy lil’ devil gulping beer on the can together with information that this beer should be regarded as the Evil Twin to the normal Stone IPA where this off-shot was raised in Belgium (nort exactly considered to be IPA-heartland) . Pours slightly hazy golden yellow with white head. Settles as fine thin layer of foam. No lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel, fermented fruit, light fruity tartness reminding me of gooseberries and currant. Soft carbonation and medium thick palate. Flavor is medium sweet followed by medium to heavy bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter and lingering. Dry finish. More a Belgian than IPA but certainly drinkable when you get around this fact.

Finally the illustrous Stone IPA. Very good one, maybe not the best but well above average. An evolving bitterness makes it strange and wonderful. Tap at De Natte in Alphen

IPA from a can, 33cl from Geers. Pours perfect golden and clear. Low almost flat carbonation. Nose of ’stone’ fruit and ripe fruit. Not super hoppy. Palate is very soft with a long nice bitter finish. Not sure about the yeast contribution but I’ll compare with the regular Stone IPA later.

UPDATED: FEB 13, 2017 MBR. Thanks Ludo! Clear golden, white head.Dry pear taste, nicely phenolic. Some citrus. Vague bubblegum. Saison aroma. Nicely mixed taste, soft maltiness, caramel, bubblegum, sweetish banana, phenols on peppery bitterness going to a long herbal aftertaste. Dryyyy. Very interesting stuff.
