It’s no secret we helped create and popularize West Coast style IPAs (since 1997), Double IPAs (since 2000) & Triple IPAs (since 2006). In fact, IPAs of every ilk imaginable are our bread and (hop) butter at Stone Brewing Co., but we’ll be the first to admit that a night of subsisting solely on big IPAs can be a short one. Enter Stone Go To IPA, our session IPA, boasting all the gloriously bitter, citrusy, piney flavor of our bigger / industrial-strength IPAs, but with a significantly lower alcohol-by-volume (4.5%) allowing IPA fans like us to enjoy more of this amazingly, hoppy beer over a longer session, without giving up any of that gloriously crave-able botanically-driven dankness. Well, OK, when you compare to our bigger IPAs you find that you give up some, as that’s what happens when you dramatically lower the abv. And while we work hard to bend the time/space/abv intensity continuum, we’ve admittedly not yet learned to break it. This comes damn close though.

Whenever an amateur American beer drinker wants to sound enlightened he will..(whilst chugging his Carlsberg) claim that Stone is the only beer worth drinking in the US. So, because of this I am happy to get hold of a can, albeit at an extortionate 125nt from the local 7-11 in Taipei ( beers of the summer) . The nose suggests it will be bitter and hoppy. I get grapefruit, bitter hops and blood orange. The pour is good, it is a light lemony colour with a frothy head....Sort of reminds me of McEwan’s Best Scotch ( the head I mean). The flavour is American hops all over. Bitter on the tongue and zesty. It is almost tonic-wateresque but in a palatable way ( I hate tonic water ). It is a little watery and the bitterness is sharp but fleeting and not as full flavoured as say a Sam Adams would be. One major plus is it isn’t 6% + which most American IPA’s seem to claim is the norm. I once had a debate with an American about the strength of American IPA’s. He claimed English IPA’s were weak and understrength. Given we invented the beer I feel my argument was justified that American’s see IPA’s as a hostile ABV war that take no prisoners unless it is pushing 7%. They also think the more hop the better. In this case tho, it is hoppy, bitter and drinkable. I do know now to tell the novice American drinker when he tells me the virtues of Stone that in fact it is not that great and most high end IPA’s are in fact as good if not better.

Can 33 cl. Pours a hazt golden with a small, white head. Massively - and somewhat offputting - dank aroma. Lightish body, very fruity, quite some fresh aroma hops leading up to a dry and bitter finish. I never was a fan of that rough Stone aroma.... 190617

330ml can. Pours a hazy orange with a small white head. Nose is mango, pineapple, blood orange, grapefruit, sweet malts, grainy malt hops and some pine. Light mouth feel. Taste is like a tropical fruit bowl with a nice sweet caramel malt back bone. Big bitterness kicks in. Nice resinous feel on the palate. Long lasting dry bitter finish. Bloody fantastic !

wheresthepath (2321) - Buckinghamshire, ENGLAND - JUN 16, 2017
Can from Beer52. Hazy pale amber-red with about the right amount of fizz. Big tropical fruit aroma continues into the flavour - papaya, mango and peach. Grapefruit pith and light pine come in by the end. Lightly bitter in the dry finish. Mega-tasty, very refreshing and more-should, this is bang on!

33 cl. can @ Home. Brewed in Berlin. Aroma: quite intense and very good aromas of passion fruit, grapefruit, tropical fruits, mango. A quite high amount of malts’ aromas begin to show up in the background as the beer is swirled and warmed. Appearance: light to medium golden color with slightly off-white head. Medium head thickness. Creamy head made of medium to big sized bubbles. Hazy beer. Medium retention. No Brussels’ lacing. Taste: low sweetness, high bitterness, very low sourness. Flavors of grapefruit, passion fruit, tropical fruits. Hints of citrus, pine, resin. Balance is toward the hops. Massive amount of hops. Palate: low to medium body, watery to oily texture, high carbonation, very long and dry finish of grapefruit, tropical fruits, passion fruit with some citrus, resin and pine. Overall: very good appearance, aromas and flavors. Quite bitter but thirst quenching and refreshing. The bitterness is a little bit harsh, but it’s a good IPA. A lot of flavor with quite low alcohol level. Well brewed!. I think it would be better with a bit of malt sweetness counterpart.
