"There’s no question that Stone Imperial Stout is revered among enthusiasts," states Stone CEO Greg Koch. "I know, because I’m one of ’em and I can hardly wait for it to come out each year!" Some may think that a late Spring release for a special brew of this sort is an odd time for it to come out onto the market. Koch justifies this with the rationalization "What better than a warm time of year to come out with a brew that tastes great as it warms up!" That’s because "ice cold" is certainly not the appropriate way to serve the beer. Nearly without exception, the darker, richer and more alcoholic a brew is, the warmer the serving temperature should be. The Stone Imperial Stout label describes the brew as being "intensely aromatic (notes of anise, black currants, coffee, roastiness and alcohol) and heavy on the palate...expect this mysterious brew to pour like used motor oil and taste even heavier! Serve at 55 degrees."

UPDATED: JUN 9, 2012 2008 release A: Pitch black body... tan foamy head with excellent lacing as it recedes... S: Lots of roasted malts.. mostly chocolate and coffee... T/M: Mirrors the aroma as for characteristics... blasts of fark chocolate and coffee... the roasted malts are superb... but... the finish just drops off out of no where... the length of the flavor in my mouth is way too short... you get all the malts and then wham nothing... full bodied and creamy, until the drop off.. O: A good drinking RIS... a little overhyped in my book...

Shared 2016 bottle. Pitch black beer with beige head. Aroma of dark chocolate, dried fruits, dark fruits, roasted malts and light licorice. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and light to medium bitter, of chocolate, dried fruits, ripe cherries, light licorice, with notes of coffee, roasty. Medium to full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Classic, sweet, very tasty RIS.

24-09-17 // beer flight, from draft at Stone Brewing Tap-Takeover at Naiv in Frankfurt. Deep black beer with a nice beige head. Classic Imperial Stout, just perfect brewed, no additional adds, just a clean Imp. Stout. Roasted malts, coffee, some choclate, liquorice, a Little boozyness, all well blanced.

UPDATED: OCT 31, 2017 Bouteille de 75cl. Couleur brune foncé avec un voile rougeâtre. Mousse éphémère. Nez très très boisé et un peu vanillé. En bouche c'est très sec et boisé, un peu Porto et fruits secs. Bière plutôt violente, faut aimer.

From Nov 2006 Poured from 22oz bottle(room temp-2006 bottling) a pitch black with a smallish head of dark brown foam that quickly shrunk to just a fine ring around the glass and soon after that, it was gone as well. The smell is strong on the caramel malt with notes of chocolate and coffee. The taste is really big on sweet and roasted malt up front with strong flavours of chocolate and coffee that add some nice complexity. The finish brings some nice hop bitterness and there's a touch of alcohol there as well but it's not overpowering as long as you just sip on it and...that's what this brew is all about. A very good sipping RIS that more than satisfies after a 22oz serving. Body wise, this is a very "chewy" Stout and makes for a really great mouthfeel. Yum, Yum, Yummy. Bottom line: This is a top notch sample of the style and everyone should get a chance to try it. I highly recommend it! PS: I've got one more bottle of this and a bottle of the 2005. :^) Update: Drinking my second bottle of the 2006, I poured it into my NB goblet and there was lots of nice foam and lacing and it lasted for the entire session.

2016 bottle, many thanks William! Pitch black color with beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla. Taste is strawberry, roasted, chocolate. Silky mouthfeel with medium carbonation. A bit oxidized in the back. Very good, classic Imperial Stout, with the right amount of sweetness.

2015 edition. Black with a decent tan head. Roasty, chocolate, coffee, slightly boozy aroma. Coffee, roast, cocoa, dried fruit, vanilla flavours, gets better as it warms up. Nice one

UPDATED: OCT 5, 2017 Zwart met romige mokkakleurige schuimkraag die langzaam inzakt. Koffie, chocolade, lichte roast, beetje hazelnoot. Mooi in de neus en in de mond. Droge bittere afdronk. Knalstout.

Tap. Opaque petroleum black. Small tan head. Aroma: fairly vinous, roasted malts, dried fruit, brandy, minimal smoke. Fine. Full body. The same complex picture on tongue. Relatively dry. Decent amount of hops. Excellent. Monumental.

Bottle @ home. 2013 vintage. The color is almost opaque black with a beige medium head. Aroma of dry roasted malt, milk chocolate, vanilla, licorice, coffee, smoke, red fruits, nuts, slightly vinous raisins and dark fruits. Taste is roasted with dark chocolate + milk chocolate, coffee, licorice, dark fruits, some vanilla, cream, hints of smoke, nuts, wood. Full bodied with good duration and fresh, medium carbonation. Finish has roasted malts, orange zest and licorice lingering. Assertive bitterness.
